Selling D&D stuff on Ebay

I can't imagine what would possess anyone to move to India. What a wacky place to live. I've never been there, but working with so many people from there, I have a pretty good idea.

Did you get some kind of dream job down there? I have heard of Americans working there, and having servants and everything else, because you can literally pay them pennies a day.

As far as the Ebay thing is concerned, it works great. I just sold my Runequest Player's box on there. The thing of it is is that you have to pack it up and ship it all, and you have to also determine the amount of the S&H. The checking account information is for PayPal, so that people can pay you online. Without that, they have to send you a check or money order. Checks may or may not clear, so most people want until they clear before shipping. Money orders are better, but obviously cost a little bit to get them. Wal-Mart has them for something like $0.46 so they're the cheapest, I've found.

I think if I were in your shoes, I might consider selling it to my FLGS who sells used stuff. You won't get much for it, but you'll be able to unload it very easily. Otherwise, I would suggest Ebay, but I would sell them in huge lots to minimize the amount of auctions you have to deal with.

Wow.

Looking to nip that outsourcing trend in the bud?

Does this mean I might actually call for technical support and speak to a native English speaker? ;)

Heh, we're thinking Bangalore right now so that's probably more apropriate than you may have intended!

My parents met, married, and had their first child in India (mom worked at the British consulate; Dad was in the US Navy). Course that was 40 years ago, but they have nothing but good memories of their time there. Growing up, our house was full of brass artwork, including a hermaphroditic fertility statue (seven kids, so I guess it works!)

Dad's game trophies have long since rotted away, but I remember sneaking down to the basement to touch the twisted springbok horns, until their dark eyes creeped me out (which didn't take long). Dad never got his tiger, though.

Can you tell I'm a little jealous? Have fun and good luck!

Wulf

It's a beautiful place, even with it's problems (of which there are quite a few), but it's a place apart. Quite hard to explain, I suppose.

I am currently selling some stuff on eBay, so I will try and talk about what I have learned.

There are many aspects to this.

I listed 37 items and that took me six hours to do. I wrote usually the back copy for a description, used a template (that eBay remembers and lets you use), had pictures in the same place and that's how long it took. I only put one thing in a lot, otherwise, each is individual. So, if you have more than 400+ items, this will be your job for a week!

When doing this, here is what I suggest: Excel spreadsheet of some kind tracking their number, the title, start date, end date, starting price, and then room for the winners information, like address, shipping costs etc. Especially with that much.

Paypal: If you don't have a checking account paypal, you can't accept money from another person's account. It takes the upgrade to a business account to accept a credit card, and even then, there are penalties. (Technically, you can accept a credit card payment without this but the fees are up to 15% of the bid!) It is fast, which is why so many people use it. I haven't had a problem with it and have had an account for over two years.

Make sure to have a disclaimer! List what you will accept or not. List how quick you expect to be notified of payment or asked for information. We once listed no credit card paypal payments 4 times and still had people trying to pay via credit card!

With that many, I would suggest a flat rate for shipping which will only change if one person wins many auctions. Otherwise, it will take a long time to get shipping quotes, send the emails, get the payment, get it cleared and then send the item. I would suggest that any lots, which are probably heavy, you let the buyer choose what they want to do for shipping.

sob story: In my first attempt, I didn't charge for boxes, only the shipping cost. I lost 10% to the boxes and packing material because I had to pay for it. Something to keep in mind. I don't know how most people will react but I understand when I buy something that I should pay for total cost to ship it to me, not just the mailing cost. Not everyone does, though.

Definitely pimp it! I posted mine here, well in the marketplace area, and a few other areas I know. That's the point of those places, in a way, and will only serve to help you sell your items.

In any case, good luck with the auction and the move! I can't wait for your next product! I am waiting for the Roman product you talked about doing! :)

Have a good one! Take care!

That would be cool. I'd gladly fill in the holes in my collection that way. (Got the first two Witchfire modules? If they're in good condition, I'd pay more than half price for 'em.)

I have all three. If you want the first two they're yours. They're in good condition and they'll only be 1/2 price. Just for you... :)

Joe, it sounds like you're going to have a wonderful time. But if I had my druthers, I'd like you and Suzi to move closer to me, so we could game together and just hang out. You two are good people.

Thanks, we try to do our best. I think the move's going to be weird, but a good weird.

Sort of. We realized that we make enough money just through publishing our stuff to live happily in India and allow us to travel throughout the whole SE asia area. So in a way, it is a dream job, but in reverse. I keep my same job, but move to a place that I like, but where things are much less expensive.

It's is really cool. There's this feeling about it that would take a writer to adequately describe. :) Our 5 weeks there were great and gave us the confidence to just pick up and go.

I have a piddly bit of planescape. I have the Planes of Chaos boxed set with some extras (the saddle-stiched Planescape Campaign setting books) inside.

I'm going to make a long list of the things I have and post it in the appropriate forum to give people an idea of what I have. I guess I'll do the EN world auction before dealing with the hassle of ebay and creating a new checking account.

It'll take me quite a bit of time to get it down, and I think I'll start with modules first.

Maybe you could have some type of online sale with your own products? "Order X amount of product now and get 3 items from the grab bag!"

E-Bay is okay. You have to know what you're willing to accept. Make sure you charge enough on the s&h. I've also lost money on that aspect of it. If you have any friends who play and are willing to part with the goods, that's another way to get rid of it. If you have a college nearby that has a gaming group, I'm sure they'd appreciate the donation (or even a high school).

That's interesting. Maybe I'll work out some sort of incentive type deal. I'll have to think about it.

Yeah, I'm going to make sure I cover shipping and handling. Buying all that packing material isn't free. :)
