(semi-OT) How Bizarre...

Yesterday, my wife went to get the muffler on her truck fixed. While sitting in the waiting room, she ended up talking with an older man who is, apparently, something of a local journalist. They got into discussing what it was that I do for a living. He'd never heard of role-playing games. He'd never even heard of Dungeons & Dragons, which I thought was at least a name most people had heard. But he found the whole subject fascinating.

I got a phone call from him this evening. He wanted to know if I was willing to write up a short description of what role-playing is, what it's all about, and so forth, for inclusion in one of his next columns of his newsletter, the Austin Ear.

I'm going to do it, obviously. But this is just...

Odd.

Okay, I agree, I find that pretty weird, but I got that beat.

Had a crush on a girl ages back, 1989 or so. We're talking on the phone and it's late late late and we're just chatting and I mention some movie, that it's got Harrison Ford.

She says, "Who?"

I'm a little taken aback, but I'm game. "You know, the guy who played Indiana Jones?"

"Who?"

"Han Solo?"

"Who?"

"Star Wars?"

"Is that a movie?"

I had to hang up I was so distraught. She'd never HEARD of Star Wars. I just couldn't go out with this girl.

Turned out later that, perfect English notwithstanding, she'd emigrated from a farm in Poland about six months previously and hadn't seen many movies, period. By then she was seeing someone else. Sigh.

Post your article, mouseferatu, won't you? I'd be interested to read it.

Nah, I'm pretty sure he'll print what I send him, or at least the gist of it. I'm not worried about this, per se. I just think the whole thing is a bit strange, that's all.
