Semi-Rant: Maturity and dumbing down a game

The mechanical fighting bits are slow enough as it is, without dragging them out all through the night while Thespeus the Amateur figures out how to rhyme "bastard sword" in iambic pentameter.

Yagh! Coke up my nose. Again. Owww...

I know it's tempting to think that people who enjoy a different style of play than what you enjoy simply haven't learned the lessons you've learned.

But the truth is we all learn DIFFERENT things from the same lessons. And what we enjoy depends largely on what we've learned we like.

The only rule is: If you're having fun, you're doing it right.

All else is nothing but taste.

And this goes to show that even though we don't always agree...barsoomcore is still my hero.

You don't need rules to encourage role-playing, but the rules encourage different types of role-playing.

Imagine if there was a rule in D&D that went something like this: "If you narrate your actions in such a way that everyone else at the table says, "Cool!" then you get a +2 bonus on your next roll."

A rule like that is encouraging a certain style of role-playing.

People who role play and like to role play don't need to be bribed to role play.

But for those who are on the fence, or would do a great job if they gave it a try, a little incentive can go a long way.

Then that needs to come from the other players and the DM. The game doesn't have to do everything.

Sure, the group should provide encouragement and support. It's not a requirement, but it seems like a simple, elegant way to foster roleplay. C'mon Crothy, you're Mr. "More options are always good". ;) I'd have thought you'd be all about it.

*SNIP* A thesis sized rant.

You're describing a novel. Go write one, because that's what you want.

I want rule options, I can do the role playing stuff I don't need help with that. I also don't feel that players should be bribed to role play. And having rules that say "role play you get a +2 bonus" is exactly that.

Er, you don't get lots of roleplaying in your game? Sorry to hear that.

I think Zalgar7 is just saying that d20 does not encourage the roleplaying experience Dremmen is seeking. In that, he is absolutely correct.
