Serenity 2

Looks like it's just a rumour.

Still, it's an exciting rumour. I usually stay clear of made-for-TV sequels, but Joss Whedon has shown himself to be a master of the small screen.

One imagines that this rumor started circling in anticipation of pretty good DVD sales.
Hopefully, they will be good, and all things Joss (Firefly / Buffy / Angel) will continue life as straight-to-DVD (or stop once on SciFi) movies.

And then if the straight-to-DVD Marvel animated features are any good... well, the geeks will have found their platform.

OTOH, there was an article in something this week that used a Firefly/Serenity straight to dvd model as an example of how TV could be moving away from networks. That could have gotten confused into a rumor.

Though it seems like it would make sense to me. Serenity probably broke even in the theaters, but will come out ahead in DVD sales. If the D&D sequels can make money in a direct to DVD format, I think Serenity could. The only question is, would the actors and creative people want to?

Personally, they should keep releasing the franchise in movie theaters first, despite a very competitive market these days. It may not be as great as Star Wars ... *missing rolleye smiley for snarkiness* ... but I think it founds its niche in movies as 007 and Star Trek film franchise have.

This is probably rumor, given the logic.

Strong series DVD sales are what got us Serenity. They'd not use the same sales to also justify another movie, especially given that Serenity hits DVD in less than three weeks. They'll wait to see how this movie sells on DVD before making any decisions.

Words of wisdom. Makes sense to me.
