Serenity! WTF?

Today at work I received a "coming attractions" press kit from Universal covering their high-profile movie releases for 2005. It contains basic cast and crew info on the films, a synopsis, and a couple of stills for each movie.

Joss Whedon's Firefly movie, "Serenity," is included in the kit. But in none of the cast photos in the kit or on the accompanying CD-ROM contain Morena Baccarin. The group photos have all of the cast members except her, although she is listed in the credits. What's up with that? Was she not on set the ONE DAY they took promo pics? Very curious.

The press kit also contains photos and info from King Kong, but no pics of Kong. That's understandable -- PJ doesn't want to diminish the impact of the creature's image just yet.

Couldn't tell you for sure why she's not in your promo package, but she's definitely in the movie.

My high school year book was worse. One girl had the picture of another girl in her place., and another girl's picture looked like the Joker. I don't know what they did, but she ended with pale skin, greenish hair, and bright pink lips. No kidding.

Actually, I shouldn't be surprised. For some reason, we didn't get our yearbooks until months after graduation. Not the most competent bunch of people.

Maybe it's because she's not part of the crew at the beginning, seeing as she left at the end of season one (and only). And maybe she's still not part of the crew at the end of the movie, either.

Upon further review, Book (Ron Glass) also is missing from the group pictures.

It's possible that they have de-emphasised her role in the movie. After all, when you're limited to 2 hours of screen time, 9 characters is a lot to deal with. It's different in a TV show, where you can focus on a few characters each episode.

As I recall, both Morena Baccarin and Ron Glass had had scheduling conflicts during the process of shooting Serenity (and before production as well). Perhaps they were unavailable the day the promos were done... and it probably was just one day of promo shoots for this particular package mentioned. I can't imagine that a lot of time was set aside for something like that. (Which isn't to say there aren't/won't be other promo shoots, just for this particular package Shadowdancer received).
