Serkis is King. :)

There are very few better character actors right now. He'll do an awesome job, both as Lumpy and as Kong.

I'm sure he'll do well in Kong but he's going to have to do a lot more regular work to find that sort of praise from me. I think someone can be in leading roles and get the "few better leading actors right now" nod from me after only a handful of projects, but for me a character actor needs to have a couple of dozen roles, of wide range and variety, to impress me. The field is much larger and the difficulty of the task is greater, IMO.

I agree with what you're saying Mark, but man, it sure is hard not to jump Andy to the top of the list (or near the top anyway) after what he did with Gollum. :)

Yeah. I can see why someone would say that.

However, I gotta suggest (if you haven't already) that you take a look at the Two Towers (Extended Edition) special Feature on Gollum. There's a bit where they do a split screen presentation of Serkis performing in his 'Gimp' white rubber outfit alongside the fully animated Gollum. It's the scene where 'Smeagol' drives 'Gollum' away for a time ("leave now and never come back!").

IMHO, Serkis' performance - no post production, no effects, wearing a skewed white rubber hood, exhausted, covered in sweat and grime, acting solo in a dialog with himself - was one of the most affecting performances I've ever seen. Watching it feels like a punch in the gut. Every time.

If he never works again, he's 'one of the greats'. Always.

So, when Kong falls off the Empire State Building, is he going to scream, "Precious"?

Just had to say it....
