D&D 5E Setting Suggestions

OldSkoolRPG

First Post
I'm about to start a 5e campaign and I'm not a big fan of the official settings like Forgotten Realms, Greyhawk, Eberron, etc... Anyone have a recommendation for an good system independent setting that they have used in the past?

What is it you're looking for in a setting? What do you dislike about the ones you listed?

Every setting is vast and has different areas, and with a bit of adjuducation, they can all suit just about any kind of adventure or campaign you want to run.

So what is it you're looking for? Give us something to go on.

While I have not run non-official settings besides homebrew (I love Greyhawk too much), I have played in a couple. I'm currently in Primeval Thule, which has a very Conan the Barbarian, Sword and Sorcery feel (plus it's already adapated to 5e). Another good one was in 3E (who's name I cannot recall nor find) had a world where there were nine gods (one for each alignment) and a blood sea (which was polluted with the blood of a slain titan) that was a very good dark fantasy alternative. I wish I could find that one again.

If you are just homebrewing, you can steal plenty of great maps off a Google search and just use these. Take a world map from one site and a few towns from another. Cobble several dungeon maps from a site and a few NPCs from another. DMsGuild has several free or pay what you want modules. You can cobble a campaign together from some good free or cheap things.

The problem with this is the background and history of everything which is where a published setting is good for. Nations and their history go together with their neighboring nations somehow, and gods that fit into the setting are all good to have but not entirely needed to play. You can also find some older setting books for cheap or free to modify and update to your needs.

Thank you all for some really good suggestions. I really like Thule and Yoon-Suin. Shiroiken I did some googling and I think the setting you were talking about with the titan blood ocean is the Scarred Lands which also looks really cool.
