Is the offspring of an orc and troll a half-orc troll, a half-troll orc, or an entirely new beastie derived from being half-orc and half-troll? And what happens when a half-troll orc falls in love with a half-ogre goblin?

My favorite half-breeds were my beloved half-troll, half-kobold creatures called Trollbolds.

Essentially, they worked out to be tougher kobolds with Regeneration. I once had the same band of Trollbolds stalk a 1st level party for several adventures as a recurring villain team. PC's whack the Trollbolds, knock them down in one hit, move on... Trollbolds regenerate, pop back up, and chase them down. Rinse and repeat.

When they finally figured it out, they were MAD. :)

I've actually been thinking that a setting with all unique races would be interesting. It depends on what races are around, and how they differ from the standard races. Personally, I've never been a fan of races that are like the standard races but only slightly modified. The proliferation of subraces was something I found annoying rather than interesting. On the other hand, I have had fun in campaigns where humans were the only race, and cultural differences resulted in cultural bonuses instead of racial bonuses.

I recently heard about the Shard RPG, which does not have any humans or other standard fantasy races. It sounded interesting from a quick look at the web site.
