Settle a magic item disagreement...

Friend of mine and I are having a disagreement. We're computing the cost of some magic items (as according to the DMG).

He says the listed price of the enchantment bonus is the cost of the magic item (no cost of basic item, no masterwork cost), regardless as to what the item is. Translation: a +1 dagger costs 2000 gp and a +1 greatsword costs 2000 gp. His proof: The example in the DMG says that the +7 dagger costs 98,000 gp, no 98,302 gp.

My argument: 1) Why would an caster charge less to put the +1 bonus on a great sword then he would on a dagger? 2) If his logic is correct, then mundane full plate armor (normally costing 1,500 gp) would cost more then +1 full plate armor (at 1,000 gp).

I can't find where in the book it supports that. Can you help me?

Caveat: If your friend is the DM, then that'stheir decision

From my copy of the SRD:
CREATING MAGIC WEAPONS
To create a magic weapon, a character needs a heat source and some iron, wood, or leatherworking tools. She also needs a supply of materials, the most obvious being the weapon or the pieces of the weapon to be assembled. Only a masterwork weapon can become a magic weapon, and the masterwork cost is added to the total cost to determine final market value. Additional magic supplies costs for the materials are subsumed in the cost for creating the magic weapon—half the base price given on Table: Weapons, according to the weapon’s total effective bonus.

Have a look at the tables for armour and weapons.

The +7 dagger = (common melee weapons table) 302 gp for the masterwork dagger and 98,000 gp for the magical enhancements. Total 98,302 gp

IDHMBIFOM, but I'm sure there are phrases like "include the cost of raw materials to make the magic item" in the creation feats, the DMG create magic item paragraphs etc.

For magic weapons or armor, you pay the cost of a masterwork version of the item, plus the cost of the magical enhancement.

If your friend is referring to the table at the top left of http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/magicWeapons.htm (or the corresponding one in the DMG), have him scroll down a bit (or look at the other tables in the DMG on page 222) - those tell you the costs for the weapon.

What led to the disagreement?

That's the example he's referencing, but in the DMG, it's says 98,000 gp.

Thanks.

In the DMG, a +7 bonus has a Base Price of 98000gp.

Then the table of Common Melee Weapons, Common Ranged Weapons, and Uncommon Weapons all have a column labelled "Weapon Cost" carrying footnote 1.

Footnote 1 states: "Add to enhancement bonus on Weapons Table to determine total market price."

What happens when you take 98000gp, and add +302 to determine total market price? You get 98302.
