Sex and Character types

Rashak Mani

First Post
In todays session my Druid tried to come on to the Witch/Mage/Cleric (NPC) after I thought the groups Purple Knight hadnt answered to her call for some carnal comfort. Yet she said I was depraved or something like that. Being a Druid and somewhat of a naturalist I was dumbfounded.

That awoke in me a question:

How do you view the sexual attitudes of stereotypical characters/races ? What do they think of sex ? (or just make funny quotes)

Let me start with some examples:

Paladins: "No Sex Please ! We´re Spiritual".
Barbarians: "YABBA DABA DUU !"
Fighter: Is it a Con Check or an Attack roll ?
Druid: Its nature´s call... cant deny it ever.
Mage: "Let me show you my magic WAND."
Rogue: "I´d rather do it with the lights off".
Elves: "All this romping around is so HUMAN ! Ecckk"
1/2Orc: "Me Garuk, you Jane!"
Ranger: "I prefer it outdoors."

[ On a more serious note I think Druids, Rangers and Barbarians should have a much more natural approach to Sex, and sexual freedom, than city bound folks and their stigmas and taboos. ]

This topic (or at the very least, the idelicacy of some parts of your post) may not be too grandma friendly.

At any rate, in response to your more serious note, I think you are wrong. Unless you invent "maidenweed" alchemical concoction (yeah, I know FR has something like that) or a "contraceptive" cantrip, characters of all stripes are likely going to be rather cautious owing to the possibility of pregnancy. This isn't the modern world we are talking about. And I imagine natural type would be even more keen to that fact than those that might have been brought up in a civilized society where teaching such matters to unmarried youths might be considered taboo.

Down with stereotypes! In my game we had an Elvish Christian priest who was oversexed, a druidess who'd been in the woods for 20 years and was thus a little unfamiliar and afraid of human contact, a dark Elf sorcerer who was seduced by a sorta hybrid succubus/marillith and nearly got himself and everyone else killed in the process, and a barbarian who found no comfort among women, only in the wild (read that as you will). ;)

I would like people to think of what their characters would do, rather than what their characters' classes would do. Though admittedly, it'd be funny to look in the PHB and see, "Adventures, Characteristics, Alignment, Religion, Background, Races, Other Classes," and then "Sexual Activities." Maybe in the Book of Exalted Deeds we'll see that.

Psion there is the "We might die tomorrow factor" most people disregard. Most PCs live a very hectic and dangerous "lifestyle"... so pregnancy isnt too high a concern maybe in the beggining levels.

Also many people play bland characters in part because the sexual nature of many classes/races is downplayed. Elves are after all viewed as aloof and would be low on the sexual scale. Orcs and Humans would be more eager. Bards and Sorcerors should be using their charsimatic personalties do get some female attention. We see this in books in films... but in RPGs it get set aside and makes somewhat for 2 Dimension PCs.

( Sorry if I was offensive... not my intention )

RangerWicket: Not to mention the Lady Despina Virtue Thread ! That Paladin certainly seems to have a crush on that "lady".

Ah, why not? I'll throw in my opinions of the most common attitudes most classes might have towards sex.

Barbarians: Barbarians are lovers of the simpler pleasures in life. Strong drink, red meat, battle, and sex. They may be unrestrained and promiscuous (see Conan), but some of the more traditional clans may have taboos agains extramarital sex.

Bards: The wandering lifestyle of a bard dosen't lend itself easily to lasting relationships, so Bards usually engage in short, passionate flings that begin and end quickly.

Cleric: Depending on the deity worshipped, Clerics may have different attitudes about sex. Some deities may require their clerics to take vows of celibacy, viewing sex as a sinful, dirty thing. Clerics who worship goddesses of fertaility, beauty, or sensual fulfillment (Sune, Sharess, etc) might engage in sex often. Sometimes in the temple itself.

Druid: As stated in Rashik Mani's post, Druids would have a very naturalistic approach to sex. Some druids could believe that sex should happen whenever the desire is felt, while others might believe that sex for purposes other than procreation goes against nature. So there could be different philosophies.

Fighter: Since fighters are a very diverse group, with different ideals, backgrounds, and alignments, it would be hard to find a common preference for fighters about sex.

Monk: Many monks would probably take vows of celibacy, believing sex to be an unnessecary diversion on the road to personal perfection. Other monks might not hold to these same ideals, instead viewing sex as something natural.

Paladins: I belive that most paladins would be very traditional. They would court the object of their desire, and work to obtain the approval of their significant other's parents/guardians. Most paladins would voluntarily wait until marriage for sex, and find adultury to be extremely repugnant.

Rangers: Rangers are solitary by nature, spending most of their time alone or in small parties patrolling the wild lands. This might lead to the attitude of "Take what you can get" in regards to sex, while others rangers might choose a mate, but only see them during brief periods between wilderness trips.

Rogue: Rogues are secretive and sometimes distrusting of others, which could cause problems in a relationship. Still, since Rogues are living, breathing beings with needs and desires, they'd probably engage in affairs with others who understand them, and don't ask too many questions.

Sorcerer: Many superstitions surround sorcerors, which could scare some people away from them. But on the other hand, their above-average charisma would probably help them on in attracting partners.

Wizards: Most wizards tend to be bookish and eccentric, caring little for love and sex while they persue their study of magic. Of course, there are exceptions (Elminster).

Yeah, I know there wasn't much humor, maybe I'll try a humor post later, :)

Go the Monk..

Master.. when can I have sex?
Grasshopper.. Only when you have mastered Purity of Body.. Then you may bonk to you hearts content as long as it is Tantric.

Paladin..
O yeah.. feel my Divine Health!!!

Druid Sex

I tend to feel that "naturalistic" and "whenever the desire is felt" are two very different motivations for sex. Looking to nature, you rarely see promiscuity at the same frequency as in human society. I know that there are exceptions (frequent reproduction is a rather successful survival strategy for vermin like rats, bunnies, and humans), but not to the extent that cliches and popular sayings have trained us to believe.

When it does happen, animal sex=reproduction for the strengthening of the species. For a Druid to have sex for the sake of physical gratification is, IMHO, very counter to the Druid "stereotype."

Of course, Rashik Mani never claimed his Druid was lascivious... maybe his goal is reproduction rather than gratification.

I really don't see a connection between sexuality and character class.

I do see one between ease of birth control and promiscuity. As proven in our own history.

Forgotten Realms has easily available low cost highly effective birth control; so we can assume that world is 'post sexual revolution'.

We can't say the same for any world that hasn't covered likewise covered the issue.

I tend to assume something like the FR situation in most fantasy worlds when I run them or play in them unless told otherwise by the DM of the day.

This is biological.

Estrus versus Menstrual.

Estrus animals go into heat. When in heat the female feels an uncontrollable urge to mate and emits pheromones letting nearby males know this.

Menstrual animals are always in heat. They tend to develop complex social systems to control this; but unlike Estrus animals their females are nearly always in heat and 'emitting'.

I believe that in 'the real world' only humans, apes, and some other primates are Menstrual, with the rest of nature being Estrus.
