Shadowdark Shadowdark General Thread [+]

In the spirit of Shadowdark's system, how would you handle black powder weapons?
Rather than opining on what I think Shadowdark's Spirit is (for which everyone will have a different opinion) I would rather ask you what you want your game to feel like and what you want those characters and weapons to mean and then work from there.

At the end of the day you are designing a game for your friends, it's not a medieval combat simulator.

Okay, I'll give it a shot (heh).

How would you think the designer of Shadowdark (Kelsey) would do it? What would such an item "look like" alongside the other weapons in this game?

No I do not want a medieval combat simulator. IF that was was my intent, I'd play Mythras or GURPS, not Shadowdark, obviously.

Designing the world around the minis seems like putting the flea before the horse before the cart.

I have cool minis. I want to use them. These 2 minis have guns. Hence I want guns in my Shadowdark game. It's that simple, really.

EDIT: I'm a little surprised by the snark, to be honest. What did I do wrong by asking this question?

I suspect she'd start with crossbows, add a penalty on wandering monster checks and maybe bump the damage die up one notch.

I don't have any problem with black powder myself -- it predates some of the most iconic armor used in D&D -- but I think it would be handled as simply as possible.
