Maybe it's a curse? Perhaps one that derives from humans falling into cannibalism?
That's what I was thinking.

I saw the X-Files episode "Home" when it originally aired, despite not being a regular X-Files viewer (too many mythology episodes for my tastes) and, like a lot of people, it made an impression on me.

I was thinking that the werehogs would be something like that. Having the condition be the result of a curse is good. I should probably stop calling them lycanthropes and figure out something better.

Basically, they're big cannibal hillbillies who can turn into giant carnivorous hog hybrids.

Throughout this campaign, the player characters have come upon scenes where larger-than-normal human footprints walk off from sites where other travelers or homesteaders have vanished. So the players know something bad is coming.
