Shaman Core Class?

You might want to check out the Shaman class in the Kingdoms of Kalamar Player's Guide. It uses totems and has a lot of similarities to the Druid class.
Except that it requires spell memorization. Which was to be avoided in the final choice per the posters goals.

I haven't seen the Mongoose or Ronin ones myself. So if I could sit down with all three I'm not sure yet which I'd choose.

Just for completion's sake: there's also a core shaman class in the Diomin d20 setting.

Sorry. Just had to show that I'm the biggest geek around!

I have the following Shaman core classes in my collection:

Diomin Worldbook (Otherworld Creations): it's... interesting. I don't like it. It's confusing. It's hard to play with. But it IS interesting.

Shaman's Handbook (Green Ronin): This is a sweet book. I like it. It's fairly spirit-centered, but not as much so as Mongoose's. This is the one used in my games now.

Oriental Adventures (WotC): Very nicely presented. But it's really just a cleric / druid in disguise.

Kingdoms of Kalamar Player's Guide (Kenzer): Ouch... I just looked around and I can't find my copy!! But it feels a lot like the OA version (has spell preparation instead of spontaneous casting).

I heartily recommend the Green Ronin version.

Yes, but the Shugenja spell list is very... "non-divine" in texture. It feels more like an elemental mage spell list (since they are effectively divine elemental sorcerers). They are a far cry from Shamanistic (albeit VERY cool - especially when you add in the material from Rokugan and Magic of Rokugan).

Based on all the recommendations I picked up GR's Shaman's handbook.

I haven't looked at it yet (beyond the few minutes in my LGS) since I gamed tonight (and it's just before 4am here). Once I've taken a look at it, I'll let you all know what I think--and it's possible I'll want to pick up one of the other Shaman books as well.

Unfortunately my LGS didn't have Hunt: Rise of Evil Worldbook. From what little I saw on the ME webpage it looked interesting.

Thanks everyone, and if anyone has any more suggestions, feel free! :)

There's also one in Deadlands d20. It uses the Druid spell list (more or less), has d6 for HD, uses the weakest attack progression, gets 4 skill points per level, and has a bunch of totemic and nature powers. And like all DL d20 spell casters, it uses spell points, not prepared casting.
