Shannara movie?

I've only read the first book (Sword of Shannara"?) I have to say I really disliked it, and thought it was less original than the Eragon series. Maybe the later books improve, but I can't get excited about a movie based on the first book.

I agree. Also, most possibly it's because I read a translated version, but the language use in the books was crude. Awful would describe it better.

I liked the Knight of the Word books quite a bit more than either magic kingdom or shannara, I wish they would make it into a movie!!
Haven't you heard? This series have been "retconned" into the Shannara story. Its now the pre-history for the Shannara universe. :)

Yes, I've listenned to Apocalypse Children. I don't agree that it was ret-conned, however, because throughout the Shannara books there has been hints that their world was once much different, with advanced technology, and it took shape as it had because of a huge catastrophy in the past. The demons that helped bring the world to ruin in Knight of the Word and the demons that were all trapped behind the Elcris in Elfstones was always very suggestive, imo.

Brooks has had a lot of practice since Sword and it shows. Elfstones was a better book, and the Word series better by far.

I agree a Sword movie would be a bit too LoTR.

I would say the language was childish. I read this book three years ago, and I realized after the first few chapters it must've been written with a much younger audience in mind.

That said, I'm not really sure that's an excuse either because I've read plenty of children's or young adult fantasy books that were great stories and superbly written (His Dark Materials comes to mind, but also Narnia.)

Really glad that I read the series (or first 3 Shanarra books) in grade school. It was very vivid in my mind and is really the reason I got into fantasy and RPGs in the first place. I tried reading Tokien first, Fellowship, but it was all big-made-up-word after big-made-up-word and was really hard to follow. I can see how Shanarra could be more accessible for the uninitiated...which would be a great strength...a gateway book.

Elfstone definitely had a lot more action, and would be easier to make into a 'Hollywood' movie.

Well, I did read SoS when I was 12 many moons ago.

Heck...I could swear they outright say that in one of the first few books.

And, yes, I agree that if you're going to make a movie, use Elfstones.

I read some of the Shannara books as an adult, after I'd read LotR and other fantasy greats. Maybe they can do a decent movie of it, but the series is so me-too that I'd just expect another Eragon movie, in terms of how it was brought to the big screen.

Still, at least a Shannara movie would be easier to do than, say, an Elric movie.

The problem is the title alone: Elfstone.

Might turn off mainstream audience because of the geek word.
