I want some feedback on shapechange solutuions. What monsters are a good choice....what handy ex/su abilities have you found etc.

Mostly looking for a range of solutions to suit different enemies

Pit fiend ability scores, natural armor, and defenses are great... and if your DM would ever feature a pit fiend with equipment (armor, rings, cloaks, etc.), then you can keep what you have on.

Gold dragon speed can't be beat.

Nightshade summon undead ability is (Su), not (Sp)...

Guardinal's lay on hands ability and archon's teleport ability are both (Su).

Interesting question: how do "1/day" Su abilities work with Shapechange? Can you turn into an avoral guardinal multiple times during the duration of the spell to keep using lay on hands? Or first into avoral and then into leonal? (Similar question for nightshade summoning undead)

I've flipped through multiple books just to answer that question, once, playing a master transmogrifist. The answer is yes, but only for 3.0. You'll find it in Fiend Folio.

Incidentally, Fiend Folio has the best - and most broken - shapechangeable creatures in all the books. Zoldars have Su Wish and is immune to everything except blunt weapons. Chronotyryns take two actions per round. There was some creature with a ranged sunder that pretty much always works.

Either MM2 or MM3 has the Runehound, which has 500ft blindsight. Also the Ancient Night Twist - plant with awsome strength and con, multiple natural attacks, cha-to-saves, and some other interesting abilities. Check the Horrific Vasuthant, too.

ELH contains the Gloom, which is just nice all around. And you'll never lose initiative. And don't forget the humble Pyro/Cryo Hydra with the regrowing heads.
