thank you - I mostly understand! This sounds really cool if it can work - it does sound like a lot of work on your end.
So if in my last game I was in the Upper Dura, but I logged in today and that chat was empty, but The Cogs was active, could I just jump down there? Would the storyline be free like that or tight so that I'd have to wait to rejoin where I left off?
You are completely free to roam the city unless specifically told by a DM that you are restricted to X location. As I mentioned above the DM team will try to make sure that between adventures you can wander around and role-play freely with anyone who is on the chat. Generally speaking it is good form to allow a little time when moving through rooms to locations in the same area to allow for the possibility of meeting someone on the way.
For example: You start in the King of Fire tavern in Middle Dura but no one comes in to join you. You can see that The Drunken Dragon in Upper Dura has a bunch of people in it. You first move to Middle Dura (this room covers the streets and districts around the King of Fire) wait for a moment and then move to Upper Dura (the streets around The Drunken Dragon) wait a moment and then move into The Drunken Dragon.
The DM side of things is a bit of work but the more DMs we have the easier it is for all. It is also a rewarding experience to be able to run stories for people you don't know or don't know well. It is always nice to finish running a story and hear that people enjoyed it. Further the tale of events often is retold as people role-play with others around the chat. Sometimes a well done villain lives in infamy long after they have been defeated as new players to the chat hear of the dramatic battles against them. Doesn't hurt that we are working up a reward system for active DMs too. Allowing them to earn a little bit of xp or gold for their characters that they are not playing while running adventures for everyone else.
