She's one of us

The session was last night and everyone had a blast. I don't make my regular players roll up a character or anything, it's more of a chance for them to work on their RPing and descriptions. I did present my daughter with a new set of dice at the start of the session as a birthday gift.

Everyone had a great time. Sadly the luck of the dice was not with my daughter, even after letting her reroll several times. I still hand waved some of her misses, and she did some RPing and puzzle solving.

The funniest part of the evening was my 5 year old. I knew she was dying to join us, so I let her. Her rolling was unreal. 20, 19, 20, 19, 17. And she had the funniest line of the night. They are all attacking a dragon and she says, "I stab it....in the BUTT!" And of course, she hit.

As they scoured the Wizard's hoard, I had one more gift for my daughter. Thinkgeek sells a D20 wrapped in wire and hung from a necklace. We let her choose her favorite die(from my collection) a couple weeks ago, and my wife made up the necklace for her. She's wearing it to school today. She's so one of us!

AWESOME!

I can't imagine how hard it was for you not to splurgle your bev onto your DM's screen!

However, I CAN imagine that a bard would make a killing in the taverns singing about that!

"As dragonflame spewed left and right,
She relied on luck
The drake her allies tried to scorch
But did not burn her pluck,
And 'fore the Wizard could be eaten
Or gleaming knight down struck
She flanked the scaly, toothsome beast
And stabbed it in the butt!

(EVERYBODY SING!)

She stabbed it,
She stabbed it,
She stabbed it in the butt, the butt!

She stabbed it,
She stabbed it,
She stabbed it in the butt!"

Ah, memories....
My son was 4 when he started playing AD&D (yeah, I know, I'm a horrible parent) with my regular group. He had the attention span of a gnat until combat started and then he channeled Gen Geo. S. Patton.

My daughter started playing when she was 7 and then stopped, she picked it back up about 3 years later when she blew a Nazi away with a shotgun at a preteen only game at GenCon. We should all have such fond memories.

Neither one started with "age appropriate" material, they just jumped in and ran, and who was I to argue. :)

BTW they are 23 and 18 now, my son runs his own weekly campaign at college. My daughter volunteers with me in the True Dungeon warehouse and the entire family (wife included) are DMs during GenCon for that event.

You have no idea what you hath wrought, but you'll look back someday with a very, very large grin. Welcome to the club my friend, you're rearing the next generation of gamers.

I once DM'ed a game to my nephew. He was about 11 or so. He started to use his powers in a threatening way against some NPC so they imprisoned him and burned him as a witch.

He never roleplayed again and quite frankly I don't understand why. He plays plenty of WoW and stuff like this where your character can die. And I guess he has had his characters die several times in PC-games, but for some reason this one-time death in tabletop games was too much for him. We never talked about it.

But the funny thing is that he LOVES to hear stories about my gaming sessions. I always give him a full run-through of my stories and he really pays attention. Go figure?

My eight year old is still sulking about because she didn't get to kill the evil wizard. She's taking it a little personally. I guess I'm going to have to get another session together soon. What I really need is to get a couple of her friends over for a session, and hook them!

Re-occurring BBEG, best thing in the world to keep them coming back for more - vengeance.

That was the plan. And even worse, they need him to turn the pegasi back into princesses. His terms will be his safe release. I'm curious how my 8 year old will deal with that decision.
