Does the electric damage count towards destroying the weapon struck?
What energy types do?

Unless the material being attacked wouldn't take damage from that element then sure, they'd count. All energy types should work, unless the material indicates otherwise.

But the energy IS applieds seperately to the damage from the strike, and will most likely do half damage before hardness (IIRC - check elemental damage vs objects in the DMG).

All energy types two half damage vs. objects with 2 exceptions: Cold does 1/4 damage. Sonic does full damage.

After thinking about it, one could expect law enforcement mages to use cold spells more often since there's less collateral damage while sonic spells are used by beseiging forces as often as fire.

Acid also deals full damage (and like sonic, also bypasses hardness). From the SRD...

"Acid and sonic attacks deal damage to most objects just as they do to creatures; roll damage and apply it normally after a successful hit."

Considering acid and sonic weapons and their utility with sundering items, it's not really a surprise to me that such weapons aren't in the DMG (except for thundering, of course). :)
