Short Rest Magic

Using the power of Spell Points, able to break the spellcasting system into something more short rest-y (spells level 6 through 9 are still 1/day). I also compensated for stealing the Warlock's shtick too!

Spellcasting:

Spell points are regained upon a short or long rest. Spell slots of 6th level and higher can only be created once per day.

It's a matter of resource pacing.
With the main resources based on a short rest it doesn't matter if the party has two or twenty combats, there's not the extreme variance in abilities.

I worry about the ratio of short rests to long rests getting out-of-whack. On the other hand, with the reduction in nova-potential when you need it, that uptick might be a reasonable balance.

(The following questions are just to consider some corner cases, don't take it as a negation of the concept.)

If a 1st or 2nd level wizard or sorcerer wants to cast Mage Armor, is it your assumption that they will take a short rest immediately and just start the adventuring day an hour late, or that they will go without any spells to cast until they reach their first short rest abotu 1/3 of the way through the day?

If the players are in a safe position without time presure (which absolutely will happen at times), does that mean they can short rest to recover spells, cast all the divination and long-buff spells they want, immediately take another short rest to recover and then go on?

If there are more short rests per long rest then currently, it seems that other classes with short-rest-recharge features will also get a boost. That seems good for some (more action surge and second wind, more ki), but for classes without full casting nor short-rest mechanics like the ranger or rogue might be a little left out.

How does this interact with partial casters, or are they staying on long-rest spell recovery? It seems to lack granularity at the low end. Will a ranger 4 or 5 still only have one first level spell per short rest? It seems at that point that there's no room for creativity - "well, if I want my hunter's mark I can't afford to spend it on anything out-of-combat or anything else in combat".

Partial casters have a more difficult choice with regards to spellcasting, but I don't see that as an issue. If it is it will come up in playtesting. As for how I'll handle them, I convert their spell slots into spell points, then divide by three and adjust as needed.

A 1st or 2nd level caster actually has more spells/day on average than their counterparts.

Re: long buffs and divination: Thankfully most buffs are concentration, and concentration-less long buffs tend to be of levels that can only be created 1/day still. As for divination: Sure, it's more powerful, but usually when there's no time restraint is when they need divination least.

Onto Arcane Recovery, I'm thinking 1/day you can regain spell points equal to your level as an action. What are people's thoughts?

Good luck Yunru. I personally don't think it can be done very well, but once you have it figured out and tested let us know. I'm interested in the test results!
