Gnomes - All Gnomes speak like Canadians. Why? 'Cause they're annoying and you sometimes forget they're there, of course!

I think gnomes should have French accents

We can combine them! Rock Gnomes will speak with a Canadian accent, Svirfneblin can speak like French Canadians, and Forrest Gnomes can speak like Newfies!

Perfect.

"Should D&D be more American?"

Hey, it already uses feet and other American units of measurements instead of the metric system.

What more do you want?

Dual carriageway is what we call roads with two lanes in the same direction. And while I don't personally use a carriage, that's only because I can't afford to. There are some here who do.

Not sure if I understand what you mean about Russian and Slavic Languages
Simply that they diverged from a common slavic language (relatively) recently, thus the languages are closer to each other than, say, the Germanic languages. Common slavic broke up into the languages we have now on about the same time-table as Latin was breaking up into Spanish, French, Italian, Romanian, Catalan, etc. Like the Romance languages, the slavic languages are still close enough that you can understand quite a bit of one language if you speak another. When I was in Prague with my brothers a few years ago, my one brother who speaks Polish fairly well was able to converse with the Czechs fairly easily. My other brother who speaks Russian fluently had a little more trouble, as Russian isn't as close to Czech as Polish is, but was still able to make himself reasonably understood.

Likewise, when I lived in Argentina, reporters would go to Italy, or Brazil and ask folks on the streets questions in Spanish and get back answers in Italian or Portuguese respectively. For the most part, there wasn't any need for a translator as everyone could pretty much understand 90+% of what was said on both hands.

The metric system is inconsistent. How come Europeans strongly prefer the metric system for linear, mass and volume measurements, for instance, but nobody has every proposed metric time? ;)

Yeah, but that's only because the metric system's so stupid... so that doesn't really count.

Hey, at least you can convert different orders of magnitudes without any major headaches!

Speaking of which, can anyone explain to me how to convert between the following units?

feet, yards, and miles

ounces, pounds, and those weird tonnes you have over there...

Err... those units of measurement ere originally called (and still called over here) the "Imperial System". Guess why "Imperial"? They existed long before America did!
