D&D General Should I buy any old Ravenloft books?

The old AD&D and 3e TSR Ravenloft books are on sale on DTRPG right now. I don't see myself directly playing any of that era of Ravenloft, but I'm open to mining gothic horror content such as monsters for my Shadowdark and OSE setting, or adapting Ravenloft modules to my own setting. Is there anything good you'd recommend buying? I already have the 5E Ravenloft stuff.

I think a lot of the 5e stuff is just updated of the old stuff. Most of the old stuff will likely be online at a fan site. I know most of the Forgotten Realms stuff is. I would save the money unless you really want to worldbuild.

The 2e Von Richen Guides were pretty revolutionary at the time because they treated monsters as characters in their own right, fully customizable and diverse. They'll probably seem less revolutionary now that that has become the norm, especially post 3e. However, you may find the guides to Vampires, Ghosts, and Created as inspirational. And though WotC disavows it, the guide to the Vistani is pretty good as well, and by no means was meant at the time disrespectfully and if anything the reverse. The Vistani were clued in, woke sorts that saw the big picture.

The 3e books by S&S draw heavily on the 2e texts and are in my opinion some of the best 3e supplements that were written. But you really only need the core rulebook, as the 2e texts are at least as good at imparting the flavor of the setting - rich settings being the real trademark of 2e.

If you want a good overview of Ravenloft as a whole, I'd recommend picking up Domains of Dread (AD&D 2E).

If you're interested in a more deep dive on individual domains, check out the five Gazetteers (D&D 3.X).

If you want more to do with monsters, look at the various Van Richten's Guide sourcebooks (originally AD&D 2E, with some 3.X additions).

I still like 3.5e's Guide to the Walking Dead. Some cool ideas on making Zombies "feel fresh", if you know what I mean.

A couple of the ideas have been used in other media since it came out, but I still think it's a pretty decent book.

I just bought the 2E original boxed set (Realm of Terror), honestly mostly because of the amazing internal art. It’s always good to see where RPG tropes came from and how they’re developed. It’s a good introduction to the concepts and ideas, as well as various personalities. The downside is the massively racist and stereotyped take on Romani (Vistani), which can thankfully be ignored in its entirety. So if you can do that, I’d really recommend the 2E starter set.

Going further back, the original Ravenloft module is at least historically interesting (though why is Dracula’s castle so fighty? You barely have time to take in the Gothic atmosphere before being jumped by yet more zombies or werewolves). I don’t really rate Ravenloft 2 (honestly I don’t see much point in Azalin either) or most of the 2E modules. And I don’t really think Lord Soth or Vecna belong in Ravenloft.
