Should I buy Complete books? Advice needed...

Ok, so I want to buy the "Complete" books, but I don't want to! Gosh, I want more options for the core stuff that doesn't deviate too much from the WOTC norm, but I already have all the 3E class books - you know, Masters of the Wild and what have you. I almost don't want to buy the Complete Books just because its more money that I feel like I've already spent.

What should I do??!!?!

If you don't want to buy them, don't buy them. You can convert the old books to 3.5 and use the house rules forum here to get the more options you want.

To me the Complete series is worth owning because I really like having the additional base classes. The feats, spells, and prestige classes are nice but I feel the base classes really add something to my game.

Well, sure you should buy complete books. I for one would be upset they were missin' anything :)

Seriously my players don’t use them regularly but I think they are kind of cool.

Check with the local used book stores and see if you can pick them up for cheap. I'm in the same boat, but if I can pick themup at half cover like I've done for most of them, it's worth it.

To paraphrase Mike Mearls, "you don't need the RPG industry to produce material for your games." While buying books keeps WoTC and (for now at least) D&D in business, you don't need em. For 3.0 I bought all the splat books, and my players didn't use more than the odd feat or prestige class here and there. For 3.5 I haven't ever needed them.

Edit: But this is all my opinion, and I'm sure that they are very useful in many, many games.

Tuzenbach, good point about PHBII, I'm sure if I bought the Complete books now I would just wanna shoot myself again when that came out.

Good point Crothian, but converting the old books? That's gonna take me a LOT of work... right?

Not really. You'd only have to convert what you want to use, and more to the point what the players want to use. That really knocks the workload down right there. When converting them the biggest changes would be in skills and feats that might have changed.

I like the Complete Books that I own or borrow from friends. But... I didn't own the old 3.0 splat books so there wasn't that factor. There is a good chance had I owned the 3.0 books I would be more reluctant to pick up the Complete series and have been tempted to convert what material could for a 3.5 game.
