Sid Meier's Pirates!

Hey all,

Thanks so much for the quick feedback on this game - it has made my shopping list!

I'd like to ask some questions though, if I may?

Are you still able to pick various start time periods like in the old game?

What about starting nationalities?

What's your favorite part of the game? The least favorite?

Have any of you used a different mod? If so, what?

Thanks,

Peterson

I would go with at least 1.5 GHz CPU, 512 MB RAM, 64 or 128 MB Video Card that's certified DX 9.x compatible. I'm at about that, but my CPU is 2.33 GHz and I have no problems whatsoever.
Don't have 1.5 GHz CPU (got a P4 1.4 GHz CPU) nor 512 MB RAM (only 256 MB RAM).

Well, it's not the most hardware intensive game ever, so I bet you'd be OK. It would probably run a tad bit slower, but it'll be fun either way.

Yeah, there are about five time periods I believe. Each one changes the map slightly in terms of who controls certain ports (or whether they even exist).

What about starting nationalities?
English, Spanish, French, Dutch

What's your favorite part of the game?
The different storylines you can follow. I love how you can decide to be a total scumbag, a courtly fop, a brave privateer, or any combination thereof.

The least favorite?
Hunting for places on land is really awful sometimes. Makes you want to pull your hair out. If you have ever looked for the Lost City of the Incas, you may know what I'm talking about.

But all in all, it's a great game.

Yes -- the earlier time periods are Spanish-heavy, other-nations light.
The last time period, all are equal. The one you start off with by default
is a wealthy Spanish, and other nationalities having decent representation/ports.

Didn't know there were mods --- time to Google!

Awesome!

Thanks, and I've got even more questions as I desperately await my Income Tax check, so that I might join the masses!

Is it true that you can hunt down named Pirates? And what, exactly, is a Named Pirate? How do you tell?

I just don't remember this in the original version.

Indeed you can! There's a "Top Ten" list of pirates all taken from history (if I
read it right, the only non-RL pirates are the ones that involve your
life story -- kidnap your family, BBEG, etc.)

Their stats are listed (how many towns they've conquered, gold they have, etc.)
and as you defeat them, you rise up the Top Ten list. You also get mega-amounts
of gold for taking them down, and fame points.

-D

The named pirates are cool and a fun part of the game, but they are kind of a pushover and actually, most of them are out of their correct time period. But overall, they add something interesting to the game.

They are basically the same as Baron Raymundo, although the really wimpy ones are about on par with most of the NPC captains you face. None of them - even Blackbeard - are really much of a threat, as long as you know how to fence.

Okay, so I got it on Friday, started playing on Saturday morning....

Decided to go for it on Apprentice, just to get refamiliar with the game.

Yeah, Top Ten Pirates are too easy. They are all dead.

I hate Raymondo or whatever his name is - if you catch a glimpse of him and he sails off screen before you get within "attack" range, he's gone. You have to find clues to where he went.

Anyway, really really great game - too easy, way so, on Apprentice level though.

Love the Royal Sloop, and the land combat.

Thanks everyone!
