simple question about damage reduction

let's say bob the fighter attacks fred the barbazu with a +1 flaming longsword. fred has damage reduction 5/silver or good, and no resistance to fire. bob hits, and rolls 4 for longsword damage and 3 for fire damage.

does fred's damage reduction apply to the entire attack (longsword+fire)? in this case, fred would take 2 points of damage (4+3=7 damage, 7-5 damage reduction=2).

or, does fred's damage reduction apply only to the longsword? in this case, fred would take 3 points of damage (4-5 for the longsword, negating it completely, and 3 for the fire).

basically, does damage reduction apply to the entire attack (weapon damage plus energy damage)? or does it only apply to weapon damage, with energy damage applied separately?

(if this is totally confusing, i will try to rephrase it :))

Only to the weapon damage, not to the extra damage (e.g. flaming, holy, etc.). And, your question was phrased very well, especially with the examples.

Infinity has the right of it, so you have your answer.

I'm just poking my head in to remind you that barbazu are actually immune to fire.
