Simply AMAZING!

I have a question, then. Thanee in particular, since you seem to be a rules kind of person like myself.

Given the Deck of many things status as an artifact, can it bypass the leveling rule as written? Is there a anything that can? You do, for instance, risk everything when drawing from the deck, so why not gain multiple levels? Just a curiousity of mine. Later!

Awesome story! My players defeated a Balor in our last game but I felt there was some rules gaffs on both our parts, example, At will for spell like abilities means the Balor can use his spells freely and still attack IE teleport then gets one attack off?

Anyway, even though I managed to get the players down some in HP, only the NPC's died but the players survived barely. They had found a gem, but at the last minute, I decided to just make it a Gem that contained the soul of the Air Queen so when broken her soul is released instead of making it a major Artifact.

I'm finding that at high level, D&D starts to breakdown with any major magical items. The fact is, the players are at a level where they can start to make some powerful items themselves so their is no need for me to really reward them with powerful artifacts which will in the end I think unbalance the game.

Dont get me wrong, they have earned some nifty items, a Druid with a staff of the woodlands, A kensai with a powerful sword which he can upgrade himdself, a Mystic Theurge with a Staff of Power, a Paladin with a +6 Holy avenger and a Monk with almost Artifact Level twin Kama's of the Gecko and Knuckle Dusters of the four elements. Everybody is between 12th and 15th level. And of course the standard magical armors/ rings of protection and what not.

So I really dont think I'm a stingy DM, but I think I am a DM focused on telling an epic story without the over proliferation of magic. And we play in the Forgotten Realms!!

Nope, it just means, that there is no daily limit (can be used as often as the Balor wants).

It's still a standard action (in most cases) to activate them.

Thanks Thanee, I knew I should have just waded into the melee with my Balor, but I decided to get cute and I realized to late that I played the encounter all wrong.

Woah, I'm tempted to calculate the odds for that, but that could draw unpleasant attention - all that bad luck has to go *somewhere*, right? ;)

Too late, you just jinxed yourself.

The most hated odds for me? 1:400 and 1:8000.

Unless I'm mistaken, that's the odds of rolling the same number twice/thrice on a d20.

First time, it was my elven bladesinger and champion of Corellon Larethian (not the ROTW PrC). Our party fought against an "anty-party". For every character, there was an enemy who worked for the character's worst enemy and generally incited hate: I had a drow priestess of Lolth, our halfling hating druid a halfling blighter, the wizard another wizard.

The enemy wizards opened with horrid wilting. My fort save: Natural 1. My fort save against massive damage: Natural 1. Yes, we could afford true res, but still, Pharaun was out for that fight, and it was a fight that he really wanted to fight.

Second time, it was my favoured soul. Red wizard casts empowered fireball for 60+ points of damage. My ref save: Natural 1. So even after res, it was massive damage. Fort save: Natural 1. I couldn't believe it. Not again. I took the damn die and rolled again, just out of spite. Natural 1.

I yet have to get a series of natural twenties in a big fight....

One PC in our group died twice in one combat because of a natural 1.

First from a save-or-die spell and after getting "resurrected" from the Paladin (for 1 min./lvl), he immediately died again in an AoO from massive damage. :p

Bah.

Why so much amazing loot at level 3???

And this is why I never liked the Deck of Many Things. At level 3, what do you have to lose, really? Draw Death? Meh. Just roll up another level 1.

I guess I'm just one of the grumpy old DM types that believes PCs should be ecstatic to see even a +1 Ring of Protection and a couple of potions at level 3...

Later!

While I don't think that players should be starved, I also think that several artifacts at such a low level are too much. All the stuff they'll get now will appear boring in comparison (unless they get even more artefacts).

Sure, if they have a campaign with amazing loot all the way, and they enjoy it, it's good for them. Personally I think there are limits to everyting.
