Infernal Warlocks can tank like nobody's business.

I'd probably go with all Clerics, though. Half Strength and half Wisdom, and one of the ranged dudes would be an Elf Cleric Archer, so we'd have a sprinkling of long-range attacks. We'd have at least one Cha-heavy dude to dip into Paladin for Wrath of the Gods.

Can infernal warlocks really tank that well? Con contributes so much less to HP now, and number of surges is less important than DEF.

Wrath of the gods is nice, but I still think having one go INT for Lead the Attack would be more valuable. Too bad that same one couldnt also have magic missile, obviating the need for the elf guy.

I kinda want 2 dragonborns as the STR dudes- they can righteous brand each other silly and possibly use power attack and two handed weapons. Lord knows theyd have enough healing to not need to worry about DEF. 2 5x5 dragon breaths should be enough minion nuking to make wotc rethink the controller class.

otherwise I would go for paladin. They have a defender/leader- combo built in, can do damage and they can heal. Taking them down would be very hard and they can deal damage back.

I think per encounter a group of clerics would be more successful, not to mention fewer rounds, but per day paladins may be better at lower levels since they would burn through fewer surges.

Any single class adventure could be great if tailored for that class (e.g. cloak-and-dagger for rogues, military campaigns for defenders, etc.) actually, in that way, you could have single role campaigns that could be full of awesome. However, I don’t think a single class or role party would do as well in a standard adventure (i.e. one designed with a mix of roles in mind). My concern with a single class party would be that there’s not quite enough diversity (yet) in the different classes to make four or five mechanically unique characters. My suggestion for thematic groups would be something like: a group of Paladins and Clerics of a single faith on a mission to investigate the nature of a threat against their order. Or a group of rogues and rangers doing recon behind enemy lines in a military campaign.

I think this edition of D&D makes for a great opportunity to run "themed" groups of PCs.

But instead of saying something like, "everyone is a rogue, GO!".

Instead, let everyone play different classes, but have them all take the designated multiclass feat together to symbolize their common path.
This is a cool idea.

Elf Cleric (leather armor, bow, lasers) Wis / Dex / Cha.

Elf Ranger (TWF but uses daggers, going Dagger Master) Dex / Wis / Con.

Dragonborn Fighter (hide armor, longsword & dagger, going TWF) Str / Dex / Con / Cha -- the dashing duelist.

Human Warlock (Star Pact, Charisma powers, Stealth training) Cha / Dex / Int -- "Paul of Cthulhu".

Halfling Rogue -- "duh".

Well, it's only fair. After all, the DM's been pulling that stunt against the party for decades.

How often does the band of brigands have their token unsavory wizard, ruthless priest and/or hulking warrior thug stomping around the woods with them?

All the time, am I right?

Finally, we get to turn the tables on those dastardly DMs the world 'round!
