Sins of a Solar Empire - opinions?

Well, I've played the demo (you get 90 min. gameplay with one race only). And... it rocks. I think hooked.

Because I dig Civ IV as well as RTS (mainly the C&C-side). And this game looks like the best of both worlds, seriously! AND I get good Star Trek Armada flashbacks.

But has anybody played it? And can offer opinions? Should I run to the next store now and get it?

Can't help you, but demand answers, too!

It's very good. The AI is a little weak once your past the tipping point, in other words, it's not very good at coming from behind. But on the tougher settings, it can be quite challenging. The mod community is pretty active, too, so there's several variations to try that tweak various aspects.

I played probably 20 or so complete games before I got tired and put it on the shelf for a while, but it will definitely be one that gets put back in the rotation from time to time. The variations between the different races could be a little more dramatic, and the tech trees are a little too similar, but there was still enough differences that each had certain strategies that played better than others.

Well worth the money, IMO.

Its very generic. I dislike it. I doubt it could be worked out what with Stardock and online accounts but, wanna buy my copy?

The supposed 4X strategy influence just makes it a long, slow, and repetitive RTS. Battles are a snore with what amounts to the same units with different models attacking each other and very basic rock-paper-scissor strategy. I'm not sure if they have done anything with a live rank system but multiplayer is a nightmare, and with this game you basically have to play multiplayer because the AI is wretched.

I agree with most of this. Repetitive, simplistic tech tree, who-has-the-most-ships-wins.

i love it!!!!

it´s a bit repetive, cause you don´t have that much difference between the races, but if you had fun with the demo, you should give the game a try....

but, i can only speak for SP, because i haven´t played MP (yet)

It was okay
+ visually very pleasing
+ excellent interface
- limited replay value
- games are won by money & numbers, not tech and strategies (I guess you can say that when to spend is a strategy)
- the tech tree does not offer enough veriation, everyone ends up with the same stuff
- only three playable races

Yeah... I have it now - and played some games, so let's see:

Pros:
+ All planets are effectively choke points which makes strategic movement interesting and important, especially as it's pretty slow
+ Can make for a long game (if you like that), like 4X games
+ Good interface and lot of shiny graphics
+ I dig that diplomacy system!
+ There's a lot of interesting stuff, like cultural expansion

Cons:
- Races are pretty lackluster
- Carrier/light carrier spam plus anti-fighter capitals are, hands down, one of the best strategies, using fighters and bombers is just too good
- No campaign :(

In general, I like it and it's pretty moddable, which means I can fix some of the problems I have.

Cheers, LT.
