Arnir breaths a heavy sigh of relief as Bannock's might tears the hulking orc inquisitor assunder. He spits on the mangled corpse with the fury of man who has just been terrified for his life "Filthy Beast!" he yells at mutilated husk. Almost immediately he regains his sense of self and tunes in on the curious battle still bubbling in Haddin's cottage.

Arnir moves to M14 and looks over the Orcs. Realizing his arrows are unlikely to penetrate such rugged armor, he focuses on the Orc at H15 and begins to make a spherical motion with his hand while whispering in an ancient tongue. Out of thin air, the sphere he traces fills with a brilliant silver light, which pulses ever faster until it shines steadily as the sun. Arnir then flings this orb at the orc, and watches as it bobs and weaves silently though Haddin and Crystin to strike the orc back unerringly whereupon it explodes with a crackling arcane energy.

Arnir, your magic strikes the soldier in the chest like a sledgehammer, forcing him to fall backwards. He is dead before he hits the floor.

Torrent inhales a long deep breath with a wheeze as as Kirio's healing magic takes effect. Her eyes dart around wildly and she puts her hand on her newly healed wound. Wincing from the pain she stands up, still woozy from the realization that she is alive. "Thank you Kirio ... I thought I was done for." She then sees the burned body of Alric and she limps over, drawing her wand to administer care on the fallen warrior.

Inside the house Haddin slouches against the wall, still gripping at his chest and breathing and coughing heavily. Crystin's rage increases and she continues to scream and point her hands at the two Ragesian soldiers: "I said leave us alone you animals!" The soldier currently under the mind control of Haddin stumbles for a second and then passes out, dropping his axe and shield and collapsing into a deep sleep.

GM: The soldier at H15 is dead and the soldier at G15 has succumbed to Crystin's sleep spell. G15 is still mind controlled by Haddin, but will be snoozing on the ground for the next minute (10 rounds) unless someone disturbs him (kicks him, attacks, etc.). Given these were the last combatants, I suggest we go off of initiative right now. In the next 10 rounds, you will be capable of doing whatever you like (e.g. cutting his throat, binding him, etc.) and Torrent can easily heal Alric before he expires.

So, initiative is now over. Oh ... and congratulations because that last fight brought you to level 3! Expect an email shortly. :)

Hearing the sounds of battle fade, Torrent first rouses Alric from his fatal condition and then moves about the group checking wounds and applying healing magic from her wand. Torrent even stops to apply healing to the scowling Haddin who mutters a quiet 'thank you'.

At the touch of Torrent's wand, Alric suddenly arches his back, gasps as he takes in an explosive lung-full of air and looks around with a wild look in his eyes.

"Thank ngh... you..." Alric says to Torrent hesitantly, wincing equally from the pain of his burned skin and his broken pride.

Slowly, Alric pulls himself to the his feet and listens for a moment for the din of battle. When he hears none, he sheaths his sword and shambles over to the brutally carved inquisitor. Standing over the feral dressed abomination he allows spittle to accumulate in his mouth and then violently launches it onto the corpse with a sneer on his face.

Alric then walks back into Haddin's house, sits at the dinner table and looks levelly at Haddin. "Do you have ngh... liquor?"

Lars sees the last Ragesian soldier fall, and spends a few moments breathing heavily. Realizing he has come out of the battle unscathed, he relaxes a little and walks around, slightly dazed, surveying the scene.

Outside, he follows Alric and approaches the inquisitor's body.

He kneels and removes the claws from his hands. He puts it in his pack. "A trophy," he explains to Alric sheepishly. He then searched the man's belongings in the hopes of finding useful information and/or treasure.

Crystin rummages through the pantry and brings out a few bottles of wine and some clay cups which she arranges on the table. Her hands are shaking and she accidentally knocks a cup over: "Butterfingers...I'm still shaken up .... here you are Alric...everyone. What are we going to do with that soldier? Where are we going to live father?"

Haddin sits at the table and pours himself some wine, then fills the other cups. "Silence child. We will share a drink with these ... adventurers, for they have helped to keep us alive. However, we will continue to live here. This is our home. Your mother and uncle lived and died here and so shall we. When your friends have had their drink, they will leave and we will remain. I will compel that soldier to return to his masters and inform them that I am no longer a threat. We will not be bothered again. That is the end of this discussion."

Lars, on the gruesome remains of the inquisitor, you find the following items: the bear skull mask, a golden brooch bearing the coat of arms of the Empire of Ragesia, 6 scrolls, a wand carved from a dark wood, and 73 gp in a pouch.

There is also a folded up piece of parchment bearing the seal of the Empire of Ragesia. It is written in a formal style of common and appears to be orders or a dispatch, with an accompanying map that shows Gate Pass and its surrounding areas, with various places marked off including a place marked "target". It reads:

"Inquisitor Boreus,

You are to gather what men and resources you require and travel to a farmhouse on the outskirts of the Fire Forest, two days ride south from Gate Pass. There you will find a wizard by the name of Haddin Ja-Laffa. His prowess was known to us during our previous occupation of the city. Since he does not affiliate himself with Gabal, the headmaster and likely compliant, master of the academy in Gate Pass, he is a rogue element and must be eliminated. There are to be no prisoners and no mistakes.

Act on these orders immediately.

All glory to the Empire of Ragesia and its Empress and Supreme Inquisitor Leska

High Inquisitor Guthwulf"

GM: For ease of use, here is the rest of the gear found on the bodies of your enemies:

Half-Orc - Leather armor, masterwork silver bastard sword, 1 vial, and a necklace made of platinum chain links.

Soldiers - 2 sets of banded mail, 2 masterwork battleaxes, 2 heavy steel shields, 4 vials.

I'll put all this in the group loot document for tracking.

Hrimr runs out from the side of the house to see Torrent standing and Alric being healed.

"Thank Moradin you are all right! I would have been here sooner if I wasn't being chased by one of those damn skeletons!"

He notices some bone bits in his beard and picks them out letting out a stream of curses against orcs, necromancy, and the Ragesians. He follows everyone into the house and sits down to listen.

"Haddin, that's a good plan, but don't you think they will wonder why the Inquisitor himself isn't there to deliver the news?"

Alric casts Hrimr a withering glare at the curses against Ragesians, considers opening up a salvo of counter-insults, cools down, thinks better of it, then downs his cup of wine thinking the dwarf simply talks to rocks too much.

"Do not stress so, over us, Crystin. Your hospitality as usual, warms and humbles us."

Alric casts his gaze to the soldier at H15. Realizing he has just learned more about moving in armor he believes that armor the dead soldier is wearing would provide him with slightly improved protection. He walks over, begins stripping the armor off the soldier and begins donning it himself.
