sliding with Overwhelming Strike

Overwhelming Strike allows you to shift 1 and then slide your target 1 into the space you vacated ... What happens if you attack your target with a reach weapon from more than 1 square away ? Do you not move your target at all ? Move it closer but not TO the space you vacated ?

Thanks in advance :)

You can't move your target unless you fulfill the condition (into the space you vacated). So yeah, if you hit with a polearm you don't move them (you can always choose not to slide them anyway) unless you have a way of increasing your slides (Rushing Cleats etc).

Also, when you use Overwhelming Strike with a polearm from more than 1 square away you get slapped with a fish. You are an Avenger! Why would you ever strike from reach when you have the option to go adjacent and get your Oath on? Reach is a trap for avengers.

Thank you for the quick reply ... it was just something that came to me last night idly musing away ... it hasn't (and shouldn't be as you rightly pointed out) a practical concern ... just some theorycrafting :)

Fair enough. Of course, you can generate the same situation without the fish slapping by substituting Footwork Lure for Overwhelming Strike. For Fighters, reach is great.

Footwork Lure has been errataed to also be one square, just like Overwhelming Strike, so it no longer works with Reach.

Mapache: read the thread.

The point about not being able to slide an opponent without a +1 on slides when hitting with Overwhelming Strike is the whole thread's raison d'etre The difference is that sensible Avengers rarely have reach weapons, whereas fighters have them all the time. So it's more sensible to ask the question about Footwork Lure.

Right, and your post made it sound like you were implying that Footwork Lure with a Reach weapon would let you slide the opponent two spaces into your former space, which used to work with the printed-in-the-book text of the power until errata was issued specifically to prevent this.

Mapache: Only if you fail at reading. So it goes.

Mod Note: The implication here is "the only way it is possible to disagree with me is for you to not have read". It is not as if anyone is so perfect that no other basis for difference of opinion or misunderstanding is possible. Please, folks, leave some room for honest differences in opinion, interpretation or (*gasp*) maybe you not being as clear as you thought you were. Thanks. ~Umbran
