Slightly modifying crafting time

I'm thinking about issuing a house rule to speed up magic item crafting time a little.

As it stands now, crafting a magic item take 1 day per 1,000 gp value of the item, minimum 1 day.

I can't remember where (or if) I read it, but I believe 1 day of crafting is roughly 8 hours of work. If I'm just pulling that out of my butt, then so be it.

What I'm thinking about doing is allowing a magic item crafter to work through an entire day, minus 8 hours for sleep, and another two hours for eating, maintenance, and preparation of spells, for a total of 14 hours of work a day. This will effectively allow a crafter to complete 2 days worth of work. However, doing so will require a Concentration check (I haven't yet deterined the DC, but I'm considering an even 20). For every day of crafting in this manner, the DC of the check will increase by 1. Should you fail one check, you make no more progress on the item. Should the check fail by 5 or more, the item is ruined.

Would you consider this a good idea?

Nah, I'd stick with the 1 day per 1k of gold cost. For what I have going it assumes that the other 8 hours are also for research, smoke breaks, gaging what to do next, and giving time for the item to 'cool down' between parts of magic 'infusion'. Plus it takes a lot out of the caster physically.

I don't think it is a bad idea, though I wouldn't change crafting time in my campaign. I think we've only had 1 character make anything and she's now been traded in for a younger model so it probably won't happen again for a while.

The only change I have made is that potions are made in batches, allowing 1000Gp worth of potions to be made per day rather than 1 potion.

Yeah, for crafting by non-magical means. I use a variant of this for crafting non-magical things, but not magical ones.

Btw - I like the idea of "potions in batches". Might have to add that one to my own house rules.

I rather like this. I may use this instead of what I presented first.
