Theories why there may have been more women, from a guy who didn't get to go to GenCon.
LOTR, POKEMON, and Video Games Did Work:
I've already read that one of the contenders for solving one of the GenCon-wide puzzle games was a 12-year old girl. Brings up the question, why a 12 year old would be at GenCon. Either she wanted to be there for some of the OTHER games at Gen Con. Or a parent brought her, which leads me to theory two.
Dads Are Sexy:
As gamers get older, they settle down. Some drift away from the hobby, some have a double life between their mundane spouses and game, and others are lucky enough to find gaming women. So gamers bring wives, g/f, and some even bring their daughters to Gen Con, which I will predict will slowly begin to have a more family atmosphere as time goes on. This trend will contine.
Did We Forget White Wolf?:
Think what you want about the ST rules or their game, they brought more women into the hobby for a short while, some stayed and may have eventualy brought some more friends in.
35 Years! Well, I Guess It Isn't A Fad:
Those things that withstand time and maintain an appeal are consider classics. As Gen Con and gaming continue to thrive and go on, mundane people will have to admit that there has to be SOMETHING about the phenomon that attracts people.
No Sir, I Only Handled The Dice. I Never Rolled Them:
In some circles, it seems that RPGs in the 90s was like drugs in the 70s, something eveyone tried when they were young and innocent -- and then refuse to admit to it for another 20 years. Some girl gamers are coming back after they think about that geek b/f they dumped for a jerk. Okay, this theory is really lame, but it's poetic.
