Slightly OT: Yea Gods I'm too powerful for my level!!

Is this an isolated incident? Compare your new, shiny Ring to what the other members of the party have gotten so far. If everyone else has been given items of equal power, if you DON'T use your overpowered-for-a-5th-level-character item, you'll be left behind. How about the enemies he's throwing at you; how are they equipped?

It might be that the over-powered items are being given out intentionally; maybe the DM wants to run a high-powered game. Find out if that's what the DM wants...and if it is, go wild. You might want to let your "inner DM" talk to him about the consequences of such a game, just keep in mind that he might have a plan, after all.

As for the in-character issues of feeling cheated out of a lifelong quest here's what I'd do. It's a level-based item, right? Play up the research-and-discovery aspect of it; the character is always seeking to unlock its' secrets, and greater powers (ie higher level spell slots). Maybe the ultimate goal is to create his own version of the ring, someday. This way you can have your cake and role-play that you're eating it, too...

If it was me that gave out such a powerfull item, I'd have something really cruel and sneaky in mind...like everytime you used the item you help concentrate the essence of Mesos the Titan into the ring. Eventually the ring would gain a certain level of sentience, become an artifact, and start actively working to further the return of one of the most powerfull titans to scarn.

Ysgarran.

The approach I would take is to have my character understand just how powerful such an item was and to be afraid of such power. You can't be certain that such an item doesn't have any strings attached to it.

So I'd carry it around on a chain around my neck (suffering the comparrisons to Frodo no doubt) and only put it on in an "emergency". Every chance I got to talk to a Bard or have it examined in some fashion I'd take. After a few levels, the character will start to feel more comfortable with this power but still realize that he must use it responsibly.

Do the other PCs have powerful stuff, too?

Also, do you feel the game is too "easy?"
[edit to clarify] For your taste, that is; not according to some chart in some book. ;)[/edit]

If the answers are "yes" and "no," respectively, I don't think that there's a problem. :)

Otherwise, talk to your DM.

Go with the flow...

If that's how your GM wants to run his game, then just play the game and enjoy yourself. Don't let the obstacle between you and enjoyment of the game be your own hangups.

Relax in the knowledge that you would do things differently and just let him run his game, his way. In the meantime, make the most out of it and stay true to your character.

Would your character turn down something like this, hoping to make one for himself in another 5-10 years? ...I seriously doubt it.

Firstly, appreciate the love from the SL folks. The Sage appreciates it. (And no Ana I'm not giving it away.)

Secondly, I do feel that I outclass the other people because for the most part, we have no true "melee" fighter and the archer in our party, (while having an oathbow and some mithril chainmail +2) isn't too happy about it either. (But he's my best friend so it's not like he's THAT upset with me.) Thus there's not much to speak of that's comparable. (I mean no paladin at 5th level running around with a holy avenger.)

Darkness: Inverse the answers and then you'll see what I mean.

Ysg: Believe I wish it was but I doubt the Dm is that devious...at least I don't THINK so. (I'm willing to admit I could be wrong!)

Zhure: True but it's ONE ring. Not like I found two rings, cause if I got TWO rings of Mesos, then I'd be a near demi-godlike.

In any case folks, we'll see out this turns out.

Nightfall: You could always act paranoid, like you can't BELIEVE that such a powerful item would remain with you for long if you "flaunted it" -- by, say, wearing it publically. You could use it when you knew "boss fights" were coming up, but otherwise keep it somewhere safe & secret on your person -- and JUMP when somone mentions magic rings.

I think is the best idea I've heard so far. Kudos to the Iconic Penguin! :) Something about a paranoid sorcerer just tickles my fancy. Anyway, otherwise do what Darkness said, and talk to your DM fast!
