Small advernture paths

Well my group and I were playing in the (Age of Worms) AoW. This would have been the first time that my group would have made the trek all the way to 20th. Anyhow we had to take a break from gaming as life was getting a bit busy, so we had to hold off a few months. I was talking to one of regulars and was mentioning how it was almost time to get the group together again and he informed me that he wasn't sure if he wanted to continue in the AoW. So I'm in the process of polling my group and seeing if the others are on the same page. I'm begining to wonder if 1-20 is too long for us. Maybe we need smaller shorter APs.

So what are some shorter APs?

I know of Red hand of Doom, the new Ravenloft, RTTTOEE, Classic slavers, Classic Gaints/drow series.

Any others?

I totally understand. While I don't mind 20th level characters, I like a little variety.

I just picked up Shades of Grey from necromancer - 1-12 campaign in a book.

There's trilogies like Freeport - 1-5th/6th in 3 books (with a little room for interludes.)

Dungeon has had several like the City of Shadows arc: Touch of the Abyss, Shadows of the Abyss, and Wrath of the Abyss in117-119. The adventure starts around 11th level. It also has a description of Istivin: City of Shadows. For lower levels there is the Shards of Eberron arc that begins in 123 at 6th level.

You can find more at the Dungeon Index

While I'm still waiting to hear back from people I'm thinking that I'll Utilize smaller paths (ie. levels 1-3, 3-6, 6-9). Then see if the group is willing to go on at the end of a story arc...if yes then continue if no then maybe switching games (Spycraft, star wars) Then bounce back to the D&D game (with the same characters).

I think that the problem with the 1-20 paths is that it might get a bit daunting to keep up the pace, then if people start to get tired of the game there seems to be this sense that if you quit there is no going back. Maybe it's got something to do with remembering the story after the break...who knows.

anywho Random ramblings

I think larger adventure paths benefit by not be all-revealing too early along. If I find out at level fifteen (say, in a 1 - 20 path) that all of the things I had been doing up until that time were part of a larger puzzle, I think that's great or clever, anyway. But I am not a fan of games where I'm told my actions from day one will be part of an attempt to save the world. If I die on day two is the world a goner or am I just that replaceable in the grand scheme of things that if I don't take the actions, someone else can simply step in and take them? Throw in some legacy that claims I am the only one who can accomplish this fantastic quest and I pretty much have to take a hike from the game because either I cannot die, which takes the fun out the game, IMO, or the legacy is a meta-sham that the DM is planning to adjust should things not go to plan, in which case my actions are actually meaningless. No thanks.

Eberron's "Schema" series:

Forgotten Forge (ECS) - 1st
Shadows of the Last War - 2nd-4th
Whisper of the Vampire's Blade - 5th-7th
Grasp of the Emerald Claw - 8th-9th

Granted, WotVB has only minimal relation with the others (except for an NPC or two).

Some longre adventures are almost mini-APs: Lost City of Barakus, Banewarrens, CotSQ, etc.

Then there are older 1E options: Desert of Desolation, Queen of Spiders, U1-3 Saltmarsh campaign, X4-5, etc.
