Sneak Attack question

Unearthed Arcana (I think).
Yeah, that's right. Unless I'm getting Arcana Unearthed and Unearthed Arcana mixed up, which I always do. The WotC one. ;)

mzsylver! Just noticed your sig. I'm a huge Chrono Trigger fan, so I had to say I liked it. :heh:

Wrong. The "best only" thing only applies to hp, bab and saves. You get all class abilities.
So a Ftr/Wiz gets 4+(Int*2) skill points? And a Fighter/Rogue gets 10+(Int*2)?

"...The process is similar to multiclassing, except that characters gain the full benefits of each class at each level. If the two classes you choose have aspects that overlap (such as Hit Dice, attack progression, saves, and class fetures common to more than one class), you choose the better aspect. The gestalt character retains all aspects that don't overlap."

So no, you don't get full sneak attack progression from both Rogue and Spellthief, you only take the better of the two.

Edit/Additional: And no, you don't get twice the skill points, as that's another overlapping aspect. You'd just take the better of the two.

Haha. I was trying to avoid posting on this thread again...

I've been using that signature for years. Actually - I just started playing the PS version of Chrono Trigger and TODAY beat up Flea and Slash. I didnt realize you got sweet cut scenes as you played this version.

And to IcyCool, thanks. *sigh* I think I dont own like 3 big WoTC books and that is one of them of course. Hehe.

I can't get into the PS version. Too... commercialized? I rather play the original over and over. :uhoh: I'm probably a purist at heart, though. I guess I just haven't seen you post before? I'll definitely remember you now, though. ;)

Oh, and Unearthed Arcana is all OGC, so it's possible you could find it online. It not now, in the future. I'm sure someone will put it up somewhere, sometime.

Edit: Actually... here it is. http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/classes/gestaltCharacters.htm

Here's a mnemonic for you, but it will only work if you're enough of a geek to have a passing knowledge of the periodic table of elements: Monte Cook's Arcana Unearthed is pure gold (Chemical symbol for gold is AU). The WotC one, Unearthed Arcana, has had the name for three editions and is all about upsetting conventional expectations (like putting the words of the title in alphabetical order).

If I can confuse the issue a little more, the UA description of gestalt characters specifically mentions sorcerer/wizard gestalt, which gets the spell progressions of both classes.

It could be argued that sneak attack is comparable, but then, if it stacks, a gestalt character could get a total number of sneak attack dice greater than that available to any normal single-classed character. No spellcasting gestalt gets you 6th level spells faster than they would come to any normal spellcaster. Gestalt isn't about being more powerful than higher level characters, but about being more versatile and more durable than other, non-gestalt characters of your own level.

I believe that sneak attack dice should overlap, not stack, for gestalt characters.

Cool, I think I can try to remember that. :D

I'd argue that Sor and Wiz spellcasting are different. The text does differentiate between "Sorcerer slots" and "Wizard slots."

Another relevant quote: "Class features that two classes share (such as uncanny dodge) accrue at the rate of the faster class."

Now, a Rogue/Scout would probably get both Sneak Attack and Skirmish.

Sorcerer and wizard spellcasting are separate from each other -they don't need to stack, you just get both.

Actually, that's probably a good rule of thumb -if they would stack for a multiclass character, you don't get both for a gestalt.

Sneak Attack doesn't stack for a multiclass character? I don't think that's right.
