sneak attack stress

Arggh!

Picture the scene...
possible TPK building up to crescendo...
Ranger-archer guy in middle of room...
Enemy Rogue-sneak attack guy walks up and stand next to Ranger-archer guy and readies an action (to attack Ranger-archer guy if another enemy moves up to flank, therefore getting sneak attack dice)
Another rogue-sneak attack guy 5 ft steps up to Ranger-archer guy to attack...
Ready attack goes off...
Ranger-archer guy gets eviscerated and falls...
Second rogue-sneak attack guy changes 5 ft step into a move to ready a sneak attack on another party member (our rogue-sneak attack guy)

My problem (oh by the way we had to 'Miracle' the bodies and some of the party back to home base!) is that either the second guy didn't stay long enough to cause the flanking attack; OR he couldn't change his mind and his 5ft-step-and-attack action into a move-and-ready versus the other party member!

What do you all think?
Is this relevant?
From the SRD:
"Deciding between an Attack or a Full Attack: After your first attack, you can decide to take a move action instead of making your remaining attacks, depending on how the first attack turns out. If you’ve already taken a 5-foot step, you can’t use your move action to move any distance, but you could still use a different kind of move action."

Well, I don't think he can change the 5' step into a regular move action.

However, would it work, if he had simply moved past him? At the point, where he was in a "flanking position" the ready action could have triggered.

Do you threaten an area while moving?
