Sneak Attacks

I'm going to basically disagree with that. The AD&D 1st Ed. PHB (p. 27) says this:

This reminds me of one of the few advantages of half-orcs in 1st ed. Multi-class fighter/thieves and fighter/assassins could use any weapon and still use all thief abilities (including backstab). Other races were limited in both armor and weaponry when multi-classing as thieves and trying to use thief abilities such as backstabbing. Cool, eh?

Or my memory could be wrong...

"Let me get this straight ... you're backstabbing with a ballista?!"

Jeff

Yes, because you aren't "backstabbing". You are attacking a foe who is unable to defend himself properly in order to deal lethal damage to vital spots, etc. (paraphrase).

If it was a backstab then it would work on undead , since they do have a back, even though they can't be critically hit.

You're forgetting that AD&D 1st Ed. isn't the original ruleset.

Tuchok's original post, as quoted, said nothing about "original" rules. He did refer to "rules in 1st and 2nd edition", which is what I responded to.
