So David Jaffe's next game is... a PS2 game?

Vigilance

Man, the PS2 is just not going away.

I almost expected something like what MS did to the X-Box, which was crush it, refusing to license games for it.

Of course, the PS2 is a much more viable console than the XB in a lot of ways. Still.

The first game to come from the collaboration will be a PlayStation 2 port of the PlayStation Portable launch title Twisted Metal Head On, which Campbell directed. Set for release this year, Head On for the PS2 will include the original PSP game, but will run at 60 frames per second with higher-resolution textures and alterations to the gameplay. It will also include up to seven levels that were originally intended to be included in a sequel to Twisted Metal: Black, as well as a Twisted Metal series retrospective.

It's in Sony's best interest to keep the PS2 going as long as they can, until they can get the PS3 price cheap. (Although they were pretty good with PS1 games after the PS2 came out as well)

Also, I think Jaffe has mentioned (he has a blog someplace) that he doesn't like making big epic games like GoW anymore. He's probably going to do a lot of PSN games or possibly PSP games (or possibly all 3 - since PSP titles can be ported easily to the PS2 or as downloadable PSN titles for the PS3)

Though I also think Jaffe is a bit overrated as a game designer. Even God of War wasn't a mega-hit, it sold well, I think 3 million copies, but considering the base and the hype from Sony...

While I agree with a lot of what you're saying (for instance, I personally have been at the beginning of Act 2- right after you kill the medusa- on GoW for a few months now), there is a small, loud, influential group of industry folks (including the entire GameSpot editorial staff) that have been panting for a GoW game on the PS3 for months now.

It just seems like if Sony could have convinced him to make GoW 3 for the PS3 before he did anything else, that that would have been a huge (I can't believe I'm going to say this) "mindshare" move for them and probably would have moved some units.

Well, Jaffe apparently didn't do much on GoW2 - he handed the reins to Cory Barlog, who is apparently doing GoW3 for the PS3.

After the first GoW, Jaffe worked on a PSP game which got cancelled, then "Calling All Cars" for PSN.

I think he just became famous because he is one of the few video game designers to have a blog (http://criminalcrackdown.blogspot.com/) and he occasionally posts on message boards and generally is pretty visable and talks a lot to the press. I mean, he does have talent, but I think he's a better self-promoter than game designer.
