I guess you were, since there was. Looks like your memory is faulty.

You can say that again.
By build up do you mean Monte talkingabout his home campaign? I hardly think you can compare Ptolus to d and d in that regard. Considering that this was a pet project of his for years, its pretty unfair to say, Ptolus had a better buildup than d and d 4 so 4e is a failure. Ptolus was homebrew that had working bits and pieces far before it was even thought to sell it, 4e is a system still being developed.

Now, I am thinking actual selling of Ptolus and its original release date. Can you really say the build up was longer because it was delayed.

No. I'm talking about the Delver's Guild website. Really, man - do a Google search. An immediate result with absolutely no research required shows a statement that the official build-up was for 1 year before the book's release date. Whether you remember it or not is irrelevant - it is what it is (was) [especially since I, among others, were part of it]. I'm not sure what else to bother to say to you - Ptolus is simply one example of a lengthy build-up time (I'm unsure of the other examples Odhanan gave).

Strawmen hurt what little credibility you have. Please stop. (Especially in any response where you quote me.)

(I have no other comments regarding whether the particular marketing strategy chosen by WotC for 4e is good or bad. Just saying that Odhanan's Ptolus example was correct. Carry on!)

Ptolus, ARcana Unearthed, Evolved ..heck throw in Iron Heroes, didn't have any ...any preview material 8 months before its release. We may have seen some art work at month six and then the real push maybe at month 3 and 4 and those were designer blogs similar to what we've seen.

wow, someone is full of crap.

There was quite a bit going on....ifyou were playing attention.

All and all there's quite a bit of difference between something like the Ptolus release and the 4e release.

Ptolus is a gaming product designed to be used by people as a D&D campaign. It like many other campaigns is just something that unless you want to run a game there, make no significant impact on the hobby as a whole. Thats not a slight to Ptolus, just that it doesn't change the way things work. You can use it or not. Just because Monte released Ptolus doesn't mean Eberon is of any less value or use.

The onus is on Malhavoc to create interest in the product.

The more stuff they release the more interest they can potentially create before actually spending the money to actually have it see print. (Thus recouping their operating costs much faster.)

With 4e, the mere announcement that it's in the works has the potential to change the industry. (At least the d20 industry, and the case can be made for the gaming industry as a whole...)

The announcement of 4e means that companies will stop producing product for 3e, people hold off on what they were going to buy, and the d20 market at least almost comes to a stall as people wait for the results.

You can't stall the market for that long, else people will start going broke.

Well, it's NOT that stuff, that I'm reading Dragon for. But it's a good written column, and I don't mind it - just as I often skipped the Sage advice (except for the cute mouse). So: That's a fine article.

Cheers, LT.

So far it seems thats one of the features of a digital dragon. (like it or hate it) there's more "room" to put articles and features there.

Except......your just mudding the water.

No one is TALKING ABOUT THE 43 RELEASE!

We're talking about DI, Dragon magazine, and DUngeon. I doubt dungeon is going to be that different(I hope) as its just adventures. But Dragon is taking a bit of change.

The ONUS as you said(of Monte) is on Wotc to create buzz and excitement for their new DI and Dragon.

Thus far? Failure. WIth 5 MONTHS to do so, as they said when they annouced the cancellation...it'll be replaced with something "really really cool"

So far? uncool.
