So does the Oni get sneak attack on his area effects?

Combat Advantage <insert what you get> also is far more versatile than sneak attack. You can have +1d6 or +2d6 damage, but you can also have 'and knocks target prone' or 'and target is grabbed' or pushed, pulled, bled, weakened _whatever_.

I agree. It shouldn't be named Sneak Attack if it acts diffferently.

They should have just named it:
Kobold Example: Combat Advantage: The kobold skirmisher deals an extra 1d6 damage on melee and ranged attacks against any target it has combat advantage against.
Goblin Butcher: Combat Advantage: The goblin butcher deals an extra 1d6 damage on melee
attacks against any target it has combat advantage

Of the Monsters shown so far:
Defiant Rake: Sneak attack: +2d6 damage when have combat advantage.
But he uses Sneak Attack approved weapons (Rapier and hand crossbow) so he is fine.

If a rogue can't sneak attack with a greatsword, then a monster shouldn't have a power called sneak attack that allows it to do so. It isn't the power that's the problem; it's the name. Calling it something different will help to dispel confusion.

Perhaps it's a function of its "lurker" category?

The whole point of 4E monster design is that, instead of listing the pile of feats and special abilities to get to a certain effect, you JUST LIST THE EFFECT.

It's entirely possible that Rogues can takes feats to treat Great Swords as Light Blades, but there is no reason to give a monster an actual feat.
