• NOW LIVE! Into the Woods--new character species, eerie monsters, and haunting villains to populate the woodlands of your D&D games.

So how long have YOU been playing D&D?

I started playing in September of 1988, thanks to a high school English teacher (who I never did thank properly). My first game was a 1st edition campaign in which the DM re-used the characters from his regular group. My first character was a Thief. I was instantly hooked.

A few weeks later, I bought the "Red Box" Basic set, and started running games. I progressed to the Expert and Companion Rules, then to 2nd Edition at the Christmas of '89. Since then, I have been priviledged to run three truly outstanding campaigns (one a LotR-clone, one a Vampire chronicle that spanned 5 real time years and 2,300 in-game years, and Shackled City), and played in one other (another Vampire Chronicle).

Somehow, it doesn't seem as long as it has been.

Geez, I feel like a noob... :D I started in 2002.

I sometimes envy those who are new to it all - the thrill of discovering everything for the first time, that first character, the first great campaign...

Old One here I guess

Been playing off and on since 1976, got the boxed set with the 3 small books. Only if i still had them :))

Luved all the adventures, even the bad ones.

Always been great people and made some lifetime friends along the way.

Well, I'm not a newb, but don't have the near 30 years that some do here.

I started late summer of 84 or 85, not to long after moving to CA. I was around 10 years old and had seen the cartoon a few times. Was over at a friends house and saw the Blue "Expert" box in his closet. Asked about it and he ran a short game that night for his brother and I, and like alot here have never looked back.

So that puts me at 20 plus years and closing in on over 2/3's of my life.

I played my first game in 1977. Bought my first book, DMG with the Efreet holding the Princess, in 1977. So 29 years.
The DMG wasn't released until '79. Are you sure it was '77, or might it have been a different book?

The only reason I can break down when I started was because I remember trying to decide what to start with. The Monster Manual was out for AD&D, but the PHB hadn't been released yet (and the DMG wasn't out until over a year later). So, I was stuck between Basic D&D (an obvious choice) and the white box set (which I also ended up getting).

I started with a copy of Chainmail (1971). but we didn't call it D&D.

OD&D(1974) is the only true game. All the other editions are just poor imitations of the real thing. :D
