It is poking fun at the inverting of the Geek Hierarchy.

Well it's Penny Arcade, it's funny in an alternate dimension where lolcats and Chuck Norris jokes are funny.

Not to rag on em too bad, they have had some funny strips but in general stuff like this makes me think that gamer culture is very insulated and.. meaningless? And this is coming from someone who spent most of the day playing GTA IV.

Your superiority complex is showing.

This is just the nature of geekery. People who may be entirely into their own aspect(s) of the geek spectrum will often maintain standard larger-society opinions of any other form of geek. It's like a baseball player talking smack about basketball. They may even be more aggressive about it because it's sort of a rival geek aspect which may be seen as bringing a bad name to their preferred geekery.

It's just the nature of people who haven't gotten a firm perspective on the value of having fun.

Penny-Arcade is mostly important as a community focal point. The comic is almost a mascot at this point compared to the rest. Personally, I can't wait to play 4E at PAX. Since 37k people showed up last year I expect there will be a game or two I can sneak into. :D

I think its a joke about turning into a roleplayer? He thought he was rolling d6s but they were d10s?
The type of the dice is incidental for the joke; it's a roleplayer-themed joke on Nietzsche's classic warning about fighting monsters and staring in the abyss.
