So one of my PCs wants to become a deity...

Hey all,

So one of my group's players wants his character to become a god ... specifically, he has the goal of becoming a demigod in the FR with the portfolio of magic items and their creation. This is an interesting idea, and I'm curious how you would handle this sort of goal? He's a 9th level wizard now, and understands he's going to have to advance to 20-30th level.

Ideas?

He must find a way to make an artifact using only his own abilities, no outside help. (incredibly long and difficult chain of quests ensues here over the course of many years)

So long as this item is in his possession then he is the demigod of magic items and their creation. If he ever loses it he loses his godhood, if it is destroyed so is he.

Yey! ;)

Hmm..... I think technically this goes in House Rules.... but how about a 10 level prestige class with insane requirements that can only be gotten into after 20th....

Perhaps a ten level epic prestige class (at the end of which, you have access to the Diety class.....) requirements:
Skills:
Knoweledge(Religion) 23 Ranks
Knoweledge(Arcana) 23 Ranks
Spellcraft 23 Ranks
Knoweledge(The Planes) 23 Ranks

Feats: 9 feats that all closely tie in with intended domain: For this guy, all item creation feats:
Brew Potion
Craft Magic Arms and Armor
Craft Rod
Craft Staff
Craft Wand
Craft Wondrous Items
Forge Ring
Scribe Scroll
Craft Construct

20th level in one of the base classes
You must have used those feats to a great extent (for this one, made an item worth at least 200,000 gp, another worth at least 150,000, another 100,000, and another valued at least 50,000)

Hi guys,

I'm looking for more of a story-driven line for the player to follow -- obviously in the Realms, if you kill a god you can take his portfolio, but if someone wants to become a deity with a portfolio in mind (magic item creation), what sort of herculean tasks should he be set to accomplish this? Who could he ask for direction on divinity? How would he go about asking (say, Azuth) for guidance?

Well, you could design an "apprentice god" route - he must
1) Attract the attention of a potential patron diety (as a Wizard, he will likely want one with the Magic domain, for compatibility); this will likely require doing many, many nice things for the matching church..... (Yay! Infinite Quests!)
2) Impress the patron diety in some manner (great work of magic, great benefit to the church as a whole, eliminate one of the diety's rivals.....)
3) Take no reward other than an apprenticeship (may need to repeat number 2 several times before this actually works...).

Okay, first he needs to set himself apart from all the other crafters. He needs to make a name for himself and he needs to be well known in his area and probably kinda known over most of the realms. While he is doing this, hopefully he is doing other things that help give him a reputaion (good or bad, it doesn;t matter). Until he does do this I doubt anyone would even talk to him about being a demi god. I see other demi gods and super high preiests would only talk about such things to serious contenders and he needs to do a lot to prove that he serious.

Once he is well known, a master in the area he plans on his portfolio...he needs to be put through the ringer. Think of it like god hazing. Not ajust anyone gets to define their portfolio and get to become a demi god. They have to really earn it.

All the while there are people working agianst him. Maybe some other god of magic doesn't want him biting a piece of his pie. Or a insane demi god cult beleives that each new god take a bit from all other gods and must stop him.

Actually, I would probably insist that he become an artificer (from Eberron but a great fit with many aspects of FR) and reach at least 30th level as well as create an artefact of such power and uniqueness that his name becomes a synonym for outstanding item crafting.

I think that the second part is the key.

Do you remember that there was an ancient civilisation in the East (ekh... on the tip of my tongue but my books are 7,000 kms away) that was ruled by a High Artificer or similarly title ruler? Perhaps the key lies in some of their ruins? Anyway, that would be a good excuse to use some of the stuff from Lost Empires of Faerun and Unapproachable East (two of my favourite FR books).

And doesn't any god need worshippers? Maybe he should be more into starting a cult of magic-item makers(thayans perhaps?). Having a couple hundred worshipers all engage in some item creation that makes him into a demi god wouldn't be a bad quest. Maybe a custom epic spell that you need alot of casters to engage in(Kind of like karsas(sp?) but without screwing things up) (i'm no good with epic spell creation, anyone have an idea what that would look like?).
