So this Cleric is beating on my party.......

Take the Rod out of the equation. Sunder or Disarm will work as the rod has to be "in hand" to work. As a carried item Sunder might be easier as it is against AC 10 + its size modifier + the Dexterity modifier of the carrying or wearing character, of course you may destroy the item.

As has been stated above even if he has unlimited curing each one is taking an action that he can't then use to damage you.

Counterspelling his healing is also a good tactic.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll let you know how it goes after we play on wednesday.

Bauglir - can he not cast spells on himself with the rod in hand?

Well the rod description says this:

This rod acts as a magnet, drawing spells or spell-like abilities into itself. The magic absorbed must be a single-target spell or a ray directed at either the character possessing the rod or her gear. The rod then nullifies the spell’s effect and stores its potential until the wielder releases this energy in the form of spells of her own. She can instantly detect a spell’s level as the rod absorbs that spell’s energy. Absorption requires no action on the part of the user if the rod is in hand at the time.

The rod requires no action on the part of the user other than to be holding it. In other words as long as you're holding the rod, all spells targetted on you will be absorbed automatically (ie you don't get a say in the matter). I can't see any reason why the cleric's own healing spells would be excluded from this..
