So what do we think of the "Shadow Chasers" approach to damage?

Not really - DR doesn't apply to Vitality damage, so a mook can quite happily take you down to 0 VP. And after that... well, the best armors in the game have DR 10, while a mook with a handgun is inflicting either 3d6 or 3d8 - which are Wound damage, 'cause you've got no Vitality left. Granted, armor applies against Wound damage, even that from crits, but 3d6 vs DR 10 is quite capable of hurting.

Ah, not quite what I meant. I don't know the Shadow Chaser rules, but I would imagine that a roll of a natural 20 (or whatever is deemed to count as a critical hit) would bypass DR and go straight to Vitality. This could be lethal, if weapons do 3d6 or 3d8 points, and everyone only has 10-14 VP.

IIRC, d20 SW (the origin of the WP/VP setup) doesn't have crit multipliers; I would imagine this is why.

You're getting your terms mixed up again, hong - I said in the first post that Vitality is Hit Dice, Wound is based on Constitution. Vitality is your damage avoidance factor - an attack that inflicts only Vitality damage didn't actually hit you. That's why crits bypass Vitality - they actually do hit, so they do Wound damage. That's a difference from D&D - D&D crits represent attacks that hit a vital spot, while "Shadow Chasers" crits represent attacks that hit, peroid. And since a crit represents an attack that actually hit, it makes sense for DR to apply. Likewise, that's why DR doesn't apply to Vitality damage - the attack didn't touch you anyway, so DR doesn't help.

Heh. :D Oh, I don't mind abstraction. Just making an observation.

By the way, I have been considering picking up GURPS lately. I'm not really sure why, but the thought has been slipping into my mind often, like a little voice. "Buy GURPS....buy GURPS."

Very strange.

Listen to the voices Wolfspider GURPS is IMO the realistic game. Its very well supported and great fun.

Yeah - just do something about those "social disadvantages" and lobotimize the combat system and you'll be fine. ;)
