So what is the new "Safe House"?

I am speechless at the very idea. He wouldn't let you buy more than one drink at a time?

I'm not kidding, and there was no misunderstanding. Clay, Hound and Russ himself were all right there witnessing this peculiar behaviour.

Sounds like some kind of wierd Indy law. Lots of the ballparks are doing the same thing - the idea is to slow people's drinking down so they don't get plastered super-fast. Of course, as tehy were selling pitchers, this makes no sense whatsoever. But hey, who said American drinking laws had to make sense?

Certainly not Champions, the lame ass sports bar in the Mariott. I ended up there two nights by happenstance and I'd really love to find a better spot.

Did anyone get to the Slippery Noodle south of Circle Centre Mall and Union Station? They frequently have great live blues (and other music), and the food isn't bad either.

The only downside is that it can be hard to talk over the noise.

I'll have to throw my vote to the Ram as well. emergent & I went there for dinner Thursday, and we talked with the hostess for a while. Apparently, the manager is a gamer, and he contacted lots of publishers beforehand to get the posters that were up everywhere. He also set up their backroom as an opengaming area, when he could just as easily have rented it out (it was their private party room) for a couple thousand a night. And the menu was just the icing on the cake (and a big ckae it was, if you had any cake).

The only problem I had with the place was also with the bartender. Buttercup & I had to chase him down in order for her to order a drink, then he disappeared without giving her change back. When we caught him again, he snapped "It's sitting on the bar" and slammed money down. We looked where he was pointing, and there was money down the bar, but it was nowhere near where we had ordered.

If only PS O'Rourkes was a bit closer...

Sounds like the Ram is worth another try. I'm sure the manager would be interested to hear about the bartender if anyone who experienced the bad service has the time to follow up with him.

I figure anyone who actually makes an effort to cater to gamers deserves a shot. We're not, as a group, famous for our good behavior and memorable tipping, but the EN crowd seems like a considerate and generous bunch so far to me.

I'll definitely give the Ram a visit next year.

I'd say the Ram. Nice place. I went there Sunday night after the con with some friends and the wait staff was as tired as we were (and the food was slow and bad). But the other times I went things were great. I suspect it'll be even better next year now that they know what to expect.

It's cool to have a restaurant/bar that actually WANTS gamers.

O'Rourkes was also really cool. But really far. Really far. But I've told that story already.

The Ram is fine (I liked the butthead ale), but it is a chain. We have Rams in at least 3 locations in the Pugeot Sound area.

The Slippery Noodle was a lot of fun. The one I found the most enjoyable though was Alcatraz. It wasn't decked out in gamer paraphernalia or anything, but the food was good.

Champions was OK (I loved their ribs on 2 out of 3 occasions I had them), but I agree with Pramas that it wasn't the be-all end-all establishment at Gen Con. I would still go there again though. The ribs were some of the best I've had. Except for last night I went there. The first two times the meat just fell off the bone, but the last time I had to pry the ribs apart and the meat was extra dry.
