So what the heck IS a Shadowfell, anyway?

I suspect its just a named location of a dungeon/castle/ruin/other site. However, it may have longer term connections to Orcus, with the adventure being the first of a path that will lead PCs to a final confrontation with the big man himself.

I really like the word "Shadowfell", it has so many possible meanings, and they're all cool.

The meaning of "Shadows" we know, but the "fell" could be so many things.

From the Middle English fel, from which we get felon, :1. Of an inhumanly cruel nature; fierce. 2. Capable of destroying; lethal. 3. Dire; sinister.

From the Old English fell: 1. The hide of an animal; a pelt. 2. A thin membrane directly beneath the hide.

From Old Norse fell, fjall, meaning mountain or hill, we get: 1. An upland stretch of open country; a moor. 2. A barren or stony hill.

So the Shadowfell could be: 1. evil Shadows (my least favorite), 2. A membrane of Shadow, directly beneath the world, and separating our world from the land of the dead, (very nice, very evocative), or 3. The Shadow Hill, or the Shadows beneath the Mountain (also cool).

Given the involvement of Orcus, I'm betting you're right, Irda, and the cleric is trying to unleash undead on the area.

And I disagree that WotC doesn't produce good modules. I'm carrying the Sunless Citadel with me into 4E, among other adventures, and I may be picking up Red Hand of Doom before it's gone as well.

Meh. Someone is seeking to destroy the world, and no one care but a bunch of inept very low-level adventurers ? Creating good modules is one thing WotC does not know.
if you save the world at level 3, and the game is suposed to lead you up to level 30, what will you do for level 3-30 ?

I personally like this style. I don't like a setting where only high level NPCs/Characters can make a difference. I like a more "low powered" setting to begin with where everyone can make a difference. Besides, why not let them be that last snowflake that decides which side of the peak the avalanche will fall....

I also have to say that although there are some modules they've done that I've not been impressed with, there are some which I thought were incredible.. such as Red Hand of Doom.

QFT.

I assume there are multiple bad people bent on destroying the world all at the same time. There may be a group of 15th level adventurers that could kill this Orcus cleric easily enough, but they're too busy saving the world from Red Dragon Duke who's trying to Gate in Tiamat ...

The world can never have too many heroes ...

You're the second person to mention that one in this thread. I'll have to check it out. I've be out of the D&D world for a few years now (Iron Heroes, you understand), so I'm out of the loop on some stuff.

Very cool.
