So what's the deal with "Midnight"?

Oh, one point I feel I need to underline, as I forgot it in my earlier post: Midnight appears to be a decent setting, but I never take any setting at face value. While I would want to tinker with it heavily before actually running it (alter the Heroic Paths, leave a chance for destroying the BBEG, winnowing and then adding to spell lists, etc.), it is well written and all the rest. I don't think it is the Be All And End All of settings by a long stretch, but it has enough interesting material that it was worth my while to pick up.

Personally, I have't read the setting, but I raise this point: what's the point of even having one of the giant races or whatever if they'll be killed before reaching 2nd level? Obviously, who would want to play one if they know they're toast the minute someone sees them? If the DM tones this aspect down, they're overpowered. Right?

Depends on the campaign I suppose. There are reasons why a player might select it, and reasons not to.

My players wouldn't touch it with a 10' pole, but some might.

In fact they are fey races, ie. elves, dwarves, halflings and so on and so forth, with their crossbreeds.

I believe there are reasons to try them and reasons not to, my players are on the idea of developing general characteristics for characters and they are probably gonna be a 50% fey group, has problems, for sure, bu they also have an epic taste with them, since fey races fighting alongside humans to detain the shadow from the north advance is something that made the fellowship epic, the skywalker a hero, and so on and so forth...

Being nonhuman is difficult, but traveling is, casting is, carrying weapons is, even reading and writing is!! If you are to be put to death at sight or just for doing one of those, why not for ALL of those, huh?

Anyway I don't think dangerous means impossible, just risk of death...

Copy aaannndd PASTE! Here is my review. You might find it useful.

I've seen you post your review in multiple Midnight threads, Ashrem, and - while it's a very informative and helpful review! - I think it'd be easier on the flow of the thread if you just post a link to the review in the future.

Thanks!

I believe this is only the second time I've pasted that.

People tend to be lazy and are more likely to find what their looking for if it is presented directly to them as opposed to given directions. I know, I'm lazy.

That said, I'll just post a link in the future.

Ah come on, the new window opens and you gotta do is keep whatever you were doing while it loads...

But I, for one, have seen it pasted just about thrice...

No worries, Ashrem, just trying to be helpful. Here's an idea that's a compromise...

When the situation calls for it, post a link to the review and ALSO include a selection from the most relevant part of the review as a teaser. A question about Midnight magic? Slap that part in a post with a link to the rest, and everyone wins: the questioner, your review, and the flow of the thread. :)

goto www.againsttheshadow.org or to the story hour and read Paka's story hour. It is well written, it rocks, and it gives you a really good feel for the world.

Aw shucks. Thanks Drakmar.

Hail Izrador and go out and get Midnight, it is my favorite fantasy world out there and this is from a guy who hates published settings. Building a world on my own is half of the fun for me but Midnight's really a solid piece of gaming real estate.

A little off topic I suppose....

What is the deal with the bindings? I know that the first batch had a lot of problems but have they improved? I want to buy MN on amazon, but I don't want to send out for a book that may fall apart.

Heres to hoping.
