So what's the deal with solo gaming?

Four Against Darkness is not an RPG. It's stands somewhere between a dungeon crawl generator and a board less wargame. I found it rather dull and repetitive.

Death Knight Squire is 5e D&D game book adventure. It's the first part of a campaign set in the Forgotten Realms. Just roll up a (one) character, read and play.

Solo Gritty Survival: Ker Nethalas, Order of Eventide and The Adventurer (by Kenk) are three good ones.

D100 Dungeon, is a classic solo fantasy RPG. It has many expansion books that now cover overland hex-crawl and world building.

There are many others. You can sift through the Geek Gamers channel. She has a great selection. geek gamers

I tried this one - it seemed a bit clunky with searching through pages for the (what happens next) keyword, and I think I got a bit bored with it once I went in a circle without stumbling across how to get to the next major clue / plot point.

Did anyone play it through to the end and have a good experience? Maybe I should give it another look.

It's old school and brutal but I still love Barbarian Prince, an hex crawl random fantasy quest. You can find a legal copy of the game in the files section of Board Game Geek. I recommend the extended and updated 40th anniversary edition:

I've often used the Barbarian Prince events booklet and map to solo D&D Basic (OSE) wilderness hexcrawl adventures with four characters.

Brutal Old School Gygaxian play sounds more appropriate to solo play, somehow.

I'm in a FB group with 6k members who play solo. That style of play is without a doubt very popular, often using BX or the Basic Fantasy RPG.

Solo journaling is also popular. They write quasi-novels with dialogue and complex stories Game of Thrones style, randomized with dice rolls.

Cozy RPG players go around collecting ingredients to brew potions to save someone. Many social encounters but no combat.

It's a very wide spectrum. It all comes down to what you are looking for as a solo experience.
