So when's the movie finished?

The rave theater here went to some new kind of pre-movie show done by E!, instead of the 'Movietunes' thing they did before, which was music over E!-sponsored placards. Now this thing runs, which usually has commercials for Discover channel and a couple other things, while the lights are up. The lights go down, then we get previews and no commercials.

The theatre I prefer to frequent makes a point of having no commercials before the films. Though this is fairly true, they always have a Fandango commercial (which they don't count for some reason, I suspect they are part owners or something, it's an online ticket buying service) which is painful enough to count for a few other commercials. Though since it is only one it doesn't take very long.

The chain is Century Theatres.

I like Century too. But there are only a few of them in this area, so I sometimes still have to go to a Regal theatre if I want to see something at a convenient time.

I miss the days when movies had intermissions. And cartoons. :(

The Regal Cinemas in my area play commercials and behind the scenes stuff starting about 20 minutes before the scheduled start time. Then they play a single commercial before the trailers. Showcase Cinemas run the standard slide show, then at start time run 3 or 4 commercials before the trailers. As the number of commercials has grown, the number of people that come in late has also grown. It seems the audience now doubles between the listed start time and the end of the trailers. It gets annoying when people are hunting for seats after the trailers, or movie, have started in a very crowded theater.

I hate the endless commercials, and while I love trailers, nowadays I feel they're getting too long. I find myself watching a trailer and at the end thinking, "Gee thanks, now I don't need to watch the movie."

Of course, if you arrive late because you expect to have to sit through 15 minutes of advertising before the movie starts, you sometimes get caught out. Like with The Fellowship of the Ring. No commercials, no trailers, no opening credits ...

When I went to the sneak preview of Harry Potter, it had NO commercials, ONE preview and then went straight into the movie.

People were still talking because they didnt realize the movie started.

I think people complain too much. IT works fine the way it USUALLY is.

Movie starts at 10? You get there before 10 to make sure you have a comfy seat and snacks and whatever you want. While you're waiting, they play commercials/ stupid trivia games.

Then, at 10pm the trailers start. 4-6 is a good number of trailers. this shouldnt take more than 10-12 minutes.

then some sorta screen that says AND NOW: THE MOVIE

More often than not, thats how it works when I go to the theatre.

Regal Cinemas even has their "the 20" a 20-minute long entertainment tonight type show that they put on so the commercials dont feel so out of place.

I would not mind commercials that FIT the movie, maybe even some of the Viral advertising that is usually net-only, but most are just extended TV commercials and therefor suck.

Commericials suck, but previews rule! I love movie previews. Sometimes the previews are better than the movie!
Even after i made it a policy to ONLY see sci-fi/ fantasy / horror movies, I found this to be true.

My local theater offers free refillls on soda and popcorn so lots of previews means more pigging out If i was hungry enough to buy corn and pop in the first place.

Our local theater does the ads/trivia slideshow thing prior to the movie starting, with music by Movietunes playing on the sound system. When the lights dim, they play only a few trailers, then the movie.

I have noticed that for the very last showing of the day, on weekdays, the trailers start prior to the posted start time for the movie, and the movie starts at the posted time. For other showings during the day, the trailers start at the posted time. Now, I frequently go to the last showing of the day on weekdays becausue there are a lot fewer people there at that time, and very few noisy young children. So it's funny the see how many people come stumbling in late because they thought the posted time was the time the trailers would start, and not the movie.

Yes, I'm sometimes easily amused, especially if that amusement comes at others' expense. :D

One of the local radio stations used to have a looping movie 'reviews' spot before the lights went down. It alternated between quick synopses of the movies and reasonably up to date chart music, while a slideshow played on the screen with the local ads and trivia. While they never actually offered any opinions on the movies for obvious reasons, it used to be pretty entertaining listening to Howard fluff his lines, which he did constantly despite the fact that it was pre-recorded. Sadly they no longer do this.

We then have to sit through about 15-20 minutes of commercials - the same ones we see on the telly; mostly for cars and bottled beer/alcopops - then three or four trailers before the movie starts.

Oh... as a special bonus, we're treated to the Pearl and Dean fanfare before and after the commercial section. You know, the really cheesey one that goes 'Da da da da da da da da da da dadada da da da da da da dada DAH!'

It sucks, but if it keeps the price of the tickets down, I'll live with it. That said, we pay around £7 for a ticket, which probably converts to roughly $10-12, with no cheap matinee or late night options.

Certainly in the UK, part of the problem is the lack of competition. We have very few small chains or independent cinemas left as they can't compete with the multiplexes. When there's no serious competition, the multiplexes can pretty much dictate what we watch. It's not like we can go to a different cinema that shows less commercials.
