Good start, character builder was simple but had an interesting way to customize it by blending between three points you can pick and choose from.

Voice acting felt like an upgrade, and by that I mean the main cast of PCs and random NPCs. Ben Starr and Devora Wilde are amazing of course, and I heard Amelia Tyler is in this too.

There's a scene I won't spoil that's very early on that is exactly my favorite way to portray that kind of thing as a DM.

My only real gripe with the game is just that they follow the D&D rules so closely that they have 2024 Backgrounds, which yes, I fully acknowledge is really a complaint of 5e24. 2024 Backgrounds RAW are just, imo, like, really bad.

Was just jarring because my group's games have house-ruled character creation to be 2014 Backgrounds + Tasha's ASI + 2024 Origin Feat, and that works so well and fluidly, and for our group just plain better, that I kinda forgot about it.

What issue do you have with 2024 backgrounds.

While BG 3 is a better game overall for many people, I think Solasta 1 was a better implementation of the D&D rules. BG 3 felt very much like a Larian game with a D&D paint job for me.

I decided to support the devs and get early access but haven't had any time to do playtests yet. Maybe this weekend when I'm stuck inside because of a freakin' blizzard. 🥶
BG3 was only great with mods, and even then only because of ferocious communitg feedback against the early form of the game.

I will take Solasta's limited mods, pants voice acting, and mid story, my only real complaint is the fugly characters.

Although, i think folks greatly exagerate how bad the story is.

What issue do you have with 2024 backgrounds.

They've got ASI's and replaced the background features with a free feat, both of which are locked choices per background.

The ASI issue is the most egregious for me, because Tasha's already fixed that problem. I don't know why they brought it back. It's the one aspect of the 2024 ruleset where I think they genuinely dropped the ball.

Swapping the background feature for a free feat is for me a downgrade, because I really valued what background features provided to characters more than the mechanical benefits of a free feat. The fact we don't get to choose the feat isn't that big of a deal comparatively, but if I'm gonna fix it I might as well do that too.

The fortunate thing is that both of these issues are really very easily fixed. We continue to use 2014 Backgrounds, continue using Tasha's rules for the starting ASI so we can use both 2014 and 2024 species, and we are fine with the 2024 philosophy of a stronger starting character, so we continue to provide the free 2024 Origin feat, but we make it a free choice.
